One of my favorite stories to come out of the Haitian tragedy is of a man who was trapped in the rubble for 60 hours, severely injured and bleeding, and managed to stay alive with the help of an.. iPhone app?! Yeah. So the guy, Dan Woolley, an aid worker from Colorado, remembered he had downloaded an app called "Pocket First Aid & CPR" from the American Heart Association, and used that information to treat his wounds properly. It's kinda amazing what this guy did, using his shirt to bandage his leg, tying his belt around the wound, firmly pressing a sock to his bleeding head, setting his alarm every 20 min to not fall asleep as a result of experiencing shock. A total validation to Apple's pretty bold statement, "There's an app for that." I imagine we will see this somewhere in their app commercials.

There's an app for that!

Adieu, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien
The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien aired last Friday. Conan ended his short stint as host on a classy note, making all the people who were on Team Coco sad to see their freakishly tall, red-headed friend go, but proud to have been supporters of such a tremendous man.
A lot of sites are posting up Conan's farewell speech, but rather than falling in suite, I'd rather show one of my favorite clips from Conan's Tonight Show:
Additionally, my favorite Late Night with Conan O'Brien clip EVER (YouTube disabled embedding it, so click the link!): Conan and Mr. T Go Apple Picking

Jimmy Kimmel Finally Managed to Make Me Laugh
Jimmy Kimmel. You've had your own late night show for how long..? And I still don't get you. WHO ARE YOU?? Are you really supposed to be funny..?
Well, Jimmy Kimmel finally managed to make me chuckle last night, when he was featured on Jay Leno's 10 at 10 portion.
Some highlights include:
Jay: What's the best prank you ever pulled?
Jimmy: I think the best prank I ever pulled was I told a guy that 5 years from now, I'm gonna give you my show. And then when the 5 years came, I gave it to him and then I took it back instantly. It was hilarious. I think he works at FOX or something now.
Jay: Ever order something off the tv?
Jimmy: Like how NBC ordered your show off the tv?
Jay: What's the most number of lap dances you've had in one night?
Jimmy: Jay, my mother is watching this show, so. Actually, no wait a minute, this show's cancelled right, nobody's watching this show.
Check the whole awkward questionnaire here:
I love how all these other late night hosts are getting their little jabs in. Team Conan FTW, ya'll!

Update: Team Conan
Ok. This will be my last post on this topic, I swear. But as an update to my Leno vs. Conan post late last week, I am posting the following very eloquent response to the debacle articulated by the man in the middle himself, Conan O'Brien. Everyone, meet class. As if I didn't love him anymore, Conan's letter is the epitome of grace and class, all with a touch of his signature humor. I think many of you probably read this already, but I'm re-posting because I want everyone to know what a stand-out guy I think this dude is. What struck me most from this response is just how much Conan, who has only been hosting the Tonight Show for 7 months, understand and respect the history and legacy of the Tonight Show institution than NBC and his predecessor host Leno does. Tsk tsk. Honestly, Leno should be ashamed. He's the one who should be graciously giving the spotlight back to Conan, and this discussion shouldn't even be happening if he was half the classy person Conan is. People of Earth: Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over the Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both. But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule. Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy. So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of the Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more. There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work. Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
Conan's Response:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Yours,
Conan

Mini-rant: Leno vs. Conan
Reports are surfacing this morning that NBC is canceling Jay Leno's low-rated prime time show and giving him back his old 11:35 late night timeslot. What would that mean for Conan, who is currently the host of that 11:35 slot? NBC is reportedly considering shrinking Leno's show to a half hour, and having Conan's show air at 12:05am. OK. Despite what this rant might sound like, I actually didn't really care about latenight show wars. To me Letterman is the best and as long as he is staying put where he is, I don't care. But, as this whole situation continues to become a mess and an exploding fiasco, I'm mad at NBC and at Leno for letting all of this happen.
Yes, airing an episode of Leno's show 5 times a week is vastly cheaper than filling that primetime spot with a drama/reality show double the budget. But from a creative standpoint, taking the exact same show, cause let's face it, Leno's 10pm show is not any different from his old Tonight Show, and airing it an hour earlier was pointless and a big fat waste of time and credibility on the already struggling network's part. And the only person I feel bad for in this whole thing is Conan, who is a brilliant entertainer, and who uprooted his entire life to be based in LA for the new Tonight Show. He's been dragged through the mud through this entire thing, while Leno has coasted by on preferential treatment, and now Conan is stuck in this awkward, weirdo position of having everything implode on him through no fault of his own. TMZ is reporting that the choice is up to Conan, and I seriously hope he walks away and screws NBC over. But, whatever happens, I'm on TEAM O'BRIEN. Ok, end rant.

BeautifulPeople.com
Happy New Year, Life in Box-ers! I kinda love this time of the year, when everything feels fresh and new, and people make a mad dash to upkeep the resolutions they've made for the upcoming year. Typically one of the most popular New Years resolutions has to do with physical appearance- getting to the gym, losing a couple of pounds, taking care of your body. Aaaaand, if this isn't a motivating factor to get your butt to the gym in a regular manner, then I don't know what is. Since the beginning of this year, a dating site called Beautiful People has kicked out about 5,000 of its members after they've posted pictures "revealing that they have let themselves go." Come again? Basically, Beautiful People is an elite dating service that prides itself on being a community of people who place priority on looks, and well, if you are not beautiful enough, then you are not allowed to be a member. Users can join only after enough members vote them "beautiful" 48 hours after their profile is uploaded. Elitist? Supremely. Hilarious? Totes Mcgotes.
Apparently the 5,000 members who were kicked out gained a little too much weight after the holidays, and so their memberships have been revoked. But fret not, lose the weight and register again! I actually find this whole thing realllllly hilarious. And a tad ridiculous, but I so appreciate the honesty of it all, summed up nicely by Robert Hintze, the founder: "As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld... Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded." HAHA! Best.company.statement.EVER.

Google Zeitgeist 2009
Google Zeitgeist is what Google calls snapshots of search trends, and it's a really interesting look at what kind of things fascinate Americans enough to search for things in droves. Someone from Google was on the Today show this morning to talk about the Zeitgeist for 2009, though that has not been updated in the Google archives as of yet. Not surprisingly, Lady Gaga, Twitter, and swine flu were among the fastest rising searches this past year, with Lady Gaga being the fastest rising in Google images searches (Um, yeah cause she looks so different with every appearance, I don't think anyone knows what she really looks like).
Update: Google Zeitgeist 2009
Around this time of year, food happens to be a big search term, and Google found that comfort foods (like chili and meatloaf) were a trend. That reminded me of something I saw this past weekend that I thought was so cool: The New York Times posted a geographic breakdown of Thanksgiving food related searches on Allrecipies.com. "Sweet potato casserole" was the most searched term nationwide, but it's interesting to see where the queries for different things come from. The breakdown raises a couple of questions, like if something isn't being searched for as much in one area, is it cause fewer people in that area are making the dish, or they already know how to make it? It's so interesting to scroll through.

Top Wikipedia Articles
My two best friends at work are Google and Wikipedia. Such a wealth of information lies at your fingertips, whether I'm using it for actual work (20% of the time) or to fulfill my personal inquiries (80% of the time). Honestly, this is my favorite article on Wiki: pet skunks. They like to be talked to! How freakin cute!!!!
Anyways, Wiki recently released their 50 most viewed articles of 2009, and the results are somewhat predictable, but also interesting. The Beatles still remain a pop culture force to be reckoned with, coming in at #2 with over 111,000 hits a day, and Micheal Jackson, another cultural icon was #3 with over 70,000 hits per day. The rest of the 50 pretty much sums up trendy topics of this last year- Slumdog Millionaire (#15), Swine Flu (#29), Megan Fox (#31), Robert Pattinson (#41- I probably contributed a lot to this one...). But I LOOOOVE the fact that people are still looking up Adolf Hitler (#17), Sex (#21), and my favorite on the list: Vagina (#36). Hahaha!

12 Most Annoying Facebook Users
Hi, my name is Jen Shin, and I'm addicted to Facebook. I check it like 6 times a day, I update it quite often, and I like to secretly and not-so-secretly stalk people. However, I keep my little addiction to myself, and I don't think I am any of the following 12 types of annoying Facebookers that CNN has identified. All annoying (hopefully I don't do any of the following), but I think my favorite has to be the Chronic Inviter: "Support my cause. Sign my petition. Play Mafia Wars with me. Which 'Star Trek' character are you? Here are the 'Top 5 cars I have personally owned.' Here are '25 Things About Me.' Here's a drink. What drink are you? We're related! I took the 'What President Are You?' quiz and found out I'm Millard Fillmore! What president are you?" Sound familiar?? Yeah. You know who you are!!!

Don't eat and drive!
I've seen people do some crazy crap while driving, like some woman putting on mascara on the NJ Turnpike while going at like 70mph (needless to say, I switched lanes ASAP). I think people don't realize that multi-taking is not a good thing when you are behind the wheel and sharing a road with other people. Talking on the phone, texting, fiddling with the radio, putting on makeup, all dangerous stuff, folks! And so is eating.
An auto insurance company just released the 10 most dangerous foods to be eating while driving, and the list is not surprising, though some of the reasons are kinda funny (fizzy sodas can lead to sneezing...). According to an Exxon survey of 1,000 people, more than 70% eat and 83% drink beverages while they are driving, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cites those distractions as top reasons for car crashes. I mean I take a sip or two while driving too, but I rarely eat while behind the wheel and I don't get how people can do it. But alas, if you HAVE to, just try not to eat the following:
- Coffee. Hot.
- Hot soup. Also hot.
- Tacos. Can disassemble easily.
- Chili dogs. Can drip easily.
- Hamburgers. Greasy hands = slippery steering wheel.
- Ribs and wings. Are you kidding with this one? Why would you be eating this behind the wheel anyway?
- Fried chicken. More greasy hands.
- Jelly donuts. Can oooze easily.
- Soda. Carbonation? Leads to sneezing? Also, has lids.
- Chocolate. Melts easily.

Movie News Roundup!
Here are some interesting movie tidbits making the news today.
* Updated Hamlet to be helmed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke
I love Hamlet, it's my favorite Shakespeare play (Ophelia is one of my favorite fictional characters), I looove Emile Hirsch (watch Into the Woods if you haven't already. NOW.). I kinda hate Catherine Hardwicke. She ruined Twilight by making it look like an amateur film school experiment, and she acts like she's 16-- "oh my god you guys, thank you so much, this is so cool, woohooo!" So I don't know how I feel about this adaptation. I loooove Hamlet. I haaaate Catherine.
* A Weeklong Twilight Cruise
You know I'm a huge fan of Twilight, but I will draw the line at spending a week with fellow CRAZY Twilight fans. On a boat. In the middle of the ocean. This just seems like a terrible idea. I wouldn't be on this cruise even if Robert Pattinson was going to be there. Actually scratch that, who am I kidding, you know I'd be like purchasing my ticket as we speak if he were to be on that ship. A weeklong cruise with RPattz?? Dream.come.true. So what if I'll have to fend off a thousand other girls? Bring it.
* Where's Waldo: The Movie.
Speaking of terrible ideas. Um, what?? How will this even work? Terrible.
* Thirst comes to the States
Park Chan Wook's Oldboy is one of my favorite movies ever. So original, such great cinematograpgy. I'm just a huge fan in general. His latest is a vampire thriller called Thirst (the movie for the provocative poster on the left), and it recently competed and screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, the good news is that it was well received, and the better news is that Focus Films picked it up to distribute in the States. July 31st, mark your calendars. Here is the trailer- sorry it's not subbed.

OMFG of the Day
So last night, whilst at a housewarming party, the news was on. Big whoop, right? It gets better. So the party is kind of loud, and I'm just watching the news and just seeing pictures and videos - and then all of a sudden BOOM! I see a mug shot of someone who looked eerily familiar. JOSEPH PONSI. Oh yeah, he was one of the guidance counselors at my old high school! I thought it was some local news garbage and thought nothing of it.
HOWEVER, I decided to Google search him, and was surprised to find the following article:
"Police said Thursday night a child pornography sting in northern New Jersey has resulted in 21 arrests. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli released mug shots of 16 of the men. The other five are juveniles. All are accused of trading images of child porn on the Internet. The youngest child depicted was a 2-year-old. Molinelli said one of the men, 63-year-old Joseph Ponsi of River Vale, works as a guidance counselor in the Palisades Park school system. " (wcbstv.com)
WTF!!! CHILD PORN??
Okay, he wasn't my guidance counselor because my last name starts with a "P" - Mr. Ponsi had all students with last names beginning with A - K. But since a lot of my friends are Korean and have the most popular Korean last name of "Kim," I got to know him through many trips to the guidance office, especially junior and senior year, when SATs and college applications were the rave.
From what I remember, he was such a nice man. He used to be a wrestling coach, and had a tank of fish in his office. He always offered his help to me, even though I wasn't technically one of his "girls," as he affectionally nicknamed me and my friends.
Good Lord. He even signed my yearbook. I even stopped by his office to talk when I wasn't in the mood to go to class!
Wow, simply stunning.

Gross of the Day: Fir Tree Growth in Lung
Um, yes I did say "Fir tree growth in lung." And yes, I am being totally literal.
WARNING: Picture is a bit gross/graphic. Be warned before you decide to 'Click for more' ..
A five-centimeter fir tree has been found in the lung of a man who complained he had a strong pain in his chest and was coughing blood...Doctors x-rayed his chest and found a tumor in one of the lungs. Suspecting cancer, they made a decision to perform biopsy, but when they cut the tissue, they were amazed to see green needles in the cut...It is obvious that a five-centimeter branch is too large to be inhaled or swallowed, doctors say. They suggest that the patient might have inhaled a small bud, which then started to grow inside his body." (mosnews.com)
Blerg, yo. I'm a hypochondriac, and this bit of news has just added itself onto my list of possible illnesses :x

on Alex Rodriguez
Kids, there are no such things as heroes, only a few individuals that make you think someday you can be one. Alex Rodriguez was never a hero. He has not been well liked since accepting a 252 million dollar contract to play with the Texas Rangers. A lot of his former teammates don't exactly speak glowingly of him. He cares too much about his image. Fans of his own team boo him.
Yet, now people's anger towards Alex is mixed with a strong dose of disappointment. It seems weird like being upset at Darth Vader for smoking pot. The reason for this disappointment goes beyond Alex's personality. People are angry at Alex because he was baseball's great hope. He was the one who would break all the records that were broken by "dirty" players. Now, he's one of them.
Should you really be surprised? It's not the 40 and 50 home runs per season, steroids or not he's always had the ability to do that. The one consistent part of Alex's personality is that he tries too hard. He tries too hard to be liked, tries too hard to fit in, tries too hard to be great. Steroids were widespread in the game at that time and he felt it would give him an edge. Little did we know back then how it would all play out. Fans look at steroids now as everything that's wrong with baseball, but the truth is that steroids saved baseball. After the player's strike in 1995 baseball was struggling to regain fans. Then came 1998's home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa and everyone fell in love again. I think we all knew what was going on. These guys looked like linebackers not baseball players. Who cared? Games were finishing 10-9 with 4 or 5 homers per game. The stadiums were filled, TV contracts were signed, and revenues went through the roof. We all knew, but nobody wanted to admit it.
Fast forward to 2009. Alex Rodriguez took steroids. Should you be that surprised? He's no hero, but he's no villain either. He's just a baseball player. What's sad about this is that Alex probably didn't even need the steroids. He's won two MVPs since MLB instituted a steroid testing policy including one of the greatest offensive seasons in baseball history in 2007. In a couple of months Yankee fans will only care about one thing; a World Series. They know if that's going to happen they'll need A-Rod to play well. If he does, they'll forgive him. If he doesn't, they'll get creatively mean. I don't know what can be taken away from this mess. I guess Mr.T said it best, "Just Say No."

Etta James is Pissed! (Who is Etta James?)
If you're angry and you know it diss the President and Beyonce. Etta James is really angry. James, the 4 time Grammy Award winner, took a shot at both President Barack Obama and Beyonce, who played James in the movie Cadillac Record. The verbal slap down occurred during a concert in Seattle a few days ago.
James said, "You guys know your President, right? You know the one with the big ears? Wait a minute, he ain't my President, he might be yours, he ain't my President. You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song - she's going to get her a*s whipped. "The great Beyonce. I can't stand Beyonce! She has no business up there, singing up there on a big ol' President day, singing my song that I've been singing forever."
At last. An angry old woman. Neither the White House nor Beyonce has commented on the matter.

The Birds, The Birds!

US Airway Plane Crashes in Hudson River- ABC
A US Airway flight crashed into the Hudson after experiencing trouble. The culprit of this fiasco was apparently a bird. Government officials say the engines failed after a bird struck the plane.
Really? Is that all it takes to down a plane? Why bother with missiles when you can bring a plane down with a life size Big Bird doll. This either shows the vulnerability of aircraft or the viciousness of birds. I have a couple of friends who can't stand feathered creatures. As one of them so wisely noted, their danger comes from their air/ground attack; swooping down from the skies to hunt you down or leaving poop all over the place for you to step on.

True and lasting love exists!
For all you pessimists out there... Researchers at Stony Brook University in New York discovered that true love can indeed last a lifetime. They scanned the brains of couples who have been together over 20 years and compared with the brain scans of new couples. In 10% of those mature couples, they had the same reaction as new couples when shown photographs of their loved ones.
"The findings go against the traditional view of romance -- that it drops off sharply in the first decade -- but we are sure it's real," said Arthur Aron, a psychologist at Stony Brook, told the Sunday Times.
So there you have it folks, true love CAN exist a long time. For 10% of us, anyway. I hope you are listening, Jorge J! A little background for you readers- he is the funniest person to watch romantic comedies with, he mumbles things like, "yeah, like that would ever happen in real life, oh COME ON!" through the entirety of the movie. True Love, FTW!
Fresh for 09 Suckas
2008, you started out so well. Then January came around and you spiraled out off control. Way to disappoint.
Last year I predicted that a white woman or a black man would win the presidency. Check. I also predicted underwear would make a come back. Thanks to celebs, check. I also predicted Bear Grylls would take of his shirt. Check, check, check, and check.
This year, no predictions. You get a clean slate 09. As Chris Martin would say, "I'm going back to the start."
My article for you today is Have Americans Gone Nuts Over Nut Allergies?
Of the roughly 3.3 million Americans who have nut allergies, about 150 die from
allergy-related causes each year, notes Christakis. Compare those figures to the
100 people who are killed yearly by lightning, 45,000 who die in car crashes,
and 1,300 killed in gun accidents. As a society, Christakis says, our priorities
have been seriously skewed, and it's largely a result of fear. "My interest is
in understanding [the reaction to nut allergies] as a spread of anxiety," he
says.
No, no, no...that's what she said.

News of the Year by Month
2008 provided us with a lot of news. Historical presidential election, economic crisis, the highs and lows of gas prices... It was a dream year for the folks at CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC for sure. Here are the most interesting headliners of each month.

Obama delivers this speech after questions mount of his relationship with Jeremiah Wright.
April- "Running Out of Plane to Exploit"
New York Time Op-Ed columnist, Paul Krugman, outlines the ever decreasing resources of planet Earth and their effects.

August- "McCain Names Alaska Gov. Palin as Running Mate"
A lot happened in August. Russia invades Georgia, the Olympics in China, Michael Phelps wins a record 8 gold medals. Yet, nothing as exciting as McCain's pick of Sarah Palin as his VP choice. Conservatives and comics rejoice.
September- "For Stocks, Worst Single-Day Drop In Two Decades"
The Dow Jones fell 778 points, nearly 7 percent, after an initial bailout plan was rejected.
October- "Senate Passes Bailout"

Unhappy people watch more TV

The University of Maryland released a study this week, finding that unhappy people watch more TV, while those who consider themselves happy socialize and read and stuff. This study, as interesting it is, makes me unhappy! Only cause this entire article/study sounds like something my mom says to me, all.the.time.
I watch a lot of TV, surprise surprise. I have at least 1 show I watch regularly every day of the week, and my DVR is probably my most favorite thing ever, next to my iPod. It's the first thing I tell people when people ask me what I like to do. Does that make me a loser? Perhaps. I just really like being entertained by my 'stories,' and I get very passionate about storylines and casting and acting and stuff. I don't see anything wrong with that, given that I do like socializing with people, and that I do do (heh heh, doodoo) other things like read (which I am also a big fan of). I also consider myself a pretty happy, decently-adjusted person, so... An hour or two (or thirty) of escapism never hurt anyone. Whatevs, University of Maryland and your fancy study! I, Jen Shin, am a happy TV watcher!
