The Most Creepy, Disgusting, Horrifying Video Ever

Growing up as a kid, I never liked fish. I hated them as pets and I refused to eat fish. Something about them freaked me out (also doesn't help that I have a slight case of thalassophobia). But within the past year, I decided to give it a go and try fish. Not too bad, but if the fish is served in its entirety (head, tail, and all), then no thanks.

That's why the following video really truly disgusted me. Apparently some chef in China discovered a way to deep fry fish without killing it.

Um, first off, WTF? Why would you even want to know how to cook a fish while keeping it alive? What would make someone think that it's a cool idea to have people dine on fish, while the poor thing is still gasping for air?? Freaking disgusting and twisted.

Anyway, click 'Read More' below if you think you can handle watching the video. I do warn you that it's truly creepy, disgusting, and horrifying .. I couldn't even make it past the first 10 seconds of it. And now I probably won't be able to eat fish ever again.

Food Flags

I saw this on Serious Eats, and I couldn't NOT share with you guys here. An advertising agency promoting the Sydney International Food Festival recreated a bunch of flags depicted by the foods of each country. It is super cool, and now I'm a little hungry. My favorite is the colorful Brazil flag above, but I also love their depiction of the South Korean and Greek flags too. Check all of the flags out here.

Free McDonald's Coffee!

You know I love free things, especially food, and you know I am generous about sharing that information to our faithful bloggers! For you coffee lovers, McDonald's is instituting Free Mocha Mondays from now until August 3, from 7am-7pm. Basically you get a free sample of their iced or hot mochas every Monday til the 3rd, with sample sizes being a generous full cup. Not bad, eh?

I've heard decidedly mixed reviews about McDonald's McCafe, but hey, I will take anything that is free and try it at least once. Also, I mean, it's McDonald's, I don't think one should expect barista greatness.

Slim Jim Shortage in US

There is a national emergency, America. There is a Slim Jim shortage in America right now!

"An explosion last month destroyed the only Slim Jim plant in the U.S., the Post reports. And the company that makes Slim Jims, ConAgra (CAG), hasn't produced any since then and won't do so for at least another month. Industry analysts say that Slim Jim loyalty is very high, and that people aren't going to be OK with substitutes if the real thing is gone. That's why some fans may be hoarding the remaining supply.

Analysts tell the Post that ConAgra could produce as many as 500 million Slim Jims every year. ConAgra said it won't return to full Slim Jim production until the fall. 'The sooner, the better,' writes the Post. 'Yesterday one convenience store in Midtown Manhattan was still selling foot-long Slim Jims that expired in February.'" (msn.com)

Free White Castle!

I love White Castle, yo. Did you know that they're the oldest hamburger chain in America (88 years young)? Take advantage of this coupon. I'm not as powerful as Oprah, so I don't foresee a mass of people running to White Castle for their free slider and them being overwhelmed by the response. But yes, White Castle sliders are yummy. Offer expires 7/12!

Best Burgers in NYC!

I love a good burger. Actually, I love any burgers, even the gross high school cafeteria kind. Anyways, while the LiB editors are off in Italy getting out fill of pasta and pizza and gelato (and other foods that end with a vowel), all you NYC/NJ folks should take advantage of these burgers in the city! I've only had one on this list (SHAKE SHACK), but hope to cross some of these off SOON.

Vitaminwater 10

Ok, here's my cranky old lady complaint of the day. Glaceau has been working overtime promoting their new line of low calorie Vitaminwater, called Vitaminwater 10. It's actually pretty good stuff, and since regular Vitaminwater has an average of 150 calories per bottle, you can get the Vitaminwater feel without drinking up your daily caloric intake. But, this is my problem with their whole campaign and brand label. Yes, they do make it clear that Vitaminwater 10 has only 10 calories per serving. But do you know how many servings are in a bottle? 2.5. Who drinks a third of their drink?? Yes, I know 25 calories is still little, my point of contention isn't that. It's just, I wish companies were a bit more realistic in their servings estimate, instead of breaking things down like that and misleading people. And yeah, a serving size is usually 1 cup which is how they get that breakdown to begin with, but honestly, a serving size should be the entire bottle. GRR.

But I will say this, the new low calorie Snapple juice drinks, in particular the Kiwi Pear, are AWESOME. And it's only 20 calories, and Snapple gets bonus points for not proclaiming that anywhere on the bottle or as a major selling point in campaigns to entice consumers. Thumbs up, Snapple.

Contest of the Day: Create your own dounut!

How cool would it be to walk into a Dunkin Donuts in the nearby future and see the donut you created fly off the shelves? Well, the folks at DD is making that a reality for some lucky person, with their Create Dunkin's Next Donut contest. Now through April 7, you can log on to the site, create your donut (up to 3 times in the course of the contest), and have a chance to win the $12,000 grand prize as well as the chance for your donut to be sold in DDs across the nation!

Just a FYI, for Round 1, they focus more on the name and story of your donut, so think about that as you create your creation. And a fun fact: my dad used to own a DD back in the day, before it reinvented itself and became cool. He loves donuts, but being around donuts made him hate it for a bit. But now he's back to his one-donut-a-day habit. Yeah, I don't know how he doesn't have diabetes either...

Coupon of the Day: $1 Oatmeal @ Jamba Juice

I love me some oatmeal. There's nothing like it to fill you up on a cold wintry morning. I normally just get my fix from the oatmeal bar at Whole Foods, but recently I've noticed a whole slew of places offering good ol' oatmeal on their menu. Starbucks, Au bon Pain, Tasti d'lite, Jamba Juice. I have yet to try the oatmeals from most of those places, except Jamba Juice, which I can totally vouch for. But at $3.25 a pop, it's not something I'm willing to indulge in every single day. Except until 3/31/09, when you can get the Jamba Juice oatmeal experience for $1! I LOVE COUPONS. Remember, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So go try some, you only have a dollar to lose.

And here is Serious Eats: New York's take on the various places you can get oatmeal. They give Jamba Juice an A.

Recipe of the Day: Mango Lassi

So the big news this week was that the little-indie-flick-that-could, Slumdog Millionaire, won 8 Oscars, effectively sweeping almost every category it was nominated for. It was technically nominated for 10 awards but was only eligible for 9, cause it was nominated against each other in the Best Original Song category, and you can only have 1 winner. So, you can say it was a sweet sweep. Anyways, in honor of this Indian film outdoing every other American film this year, I present to you one of my favorite Indian foods, the mango lassi. Lassi is like the Indian version of a milkshake, but made with yogurt (and you know how much I LOVE yogurt). Some places make it really sweet, which I don't particularly enjoy, but thanks to Ms. Martha Stewart, I've discovered that it's so easy to make on your own.

I've tried this mango lassi recipe and it's pretty delish. You can alter the amount of honey you put in, so you can make it as sweet or not sweet as you want. Oh, and btw, if I've made it, that means it's like the easiest thing to make and pretty foolproof. Maybe I'll have a Slumdog DVD release party (March) and serve the lassi. Hmmm...

Blog of the Day: This is Why You're Fat.

In case you're wondering, that is a sloppy joe on a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Enough said. Be prepared to salivate, cringe in disgust, or just be in amazement. Every time I visit the site, I feel like I'm gaining 30 lbs THROUGH MY EYES. It's really like an accident you can't look away from. Enjoy this little bit of food porn, and remember: This is why you're fat.

Super Bowl Sunday Recipes

Hey hey now, who is excited for the Super Bowl this year??? Yeah, me either. I don't quite know my plans as of yet, but if I don't end up doing anything, I'll totally be ok. I don't know if it's just me, but there doesn't seem to be the usual hoopla surrounding the Super Bowl this year, maybe because the Cardinals don't have many fans outside Arizona, and no one really cares about Pittsburgh (sorry if you do). I don't think anything will quite top last year's amazing Giants victory anyway.

But alas, if you are having a Super Bowl party, a) why haven't you invited me yet, I am the life of every party, and b) I found some cool recipes that you should definitely use. You are so very welcome!

Ok so I LOVE pigs in blankets. They're like the staple at every party/reception where hor' d'oeuvres are being served, right? And they're so tiny and good that you don't realize you've just had 6 of them. And subsequently, 500 calories. Which is why, instead of the usual recipe, you want to make these delicious De-Pudged Pigs in a blanket! Let me plug Hungry Girl while I'm at it, she has awesome low-fat recipes and tips she emails her loyal readers (I am one of them), and her cookbook is pretty sweet too. But yes, I've made these little pigs in blankets and they're realllly good.

And you can't have a party without guacamole! My friend The Duchess recently wrote a post about making the most delicious guacamole. And if you really want to try something new and exciting, add bacon to your guacamole. YUMMMM, I don't think you can ever go wrong with bacon.

Here are a couple more: Cheesy bread, Stuffed potato skins w/chicken, onions, and sour cream, Paula Deen's uber fattening nachos, and of course Red Velvet Cupcakes.

Eats of the Day

TASTEatery
1224 Anderson Avenue
Fort Lee, NJ 07024

Today at the office we did not settle for the usual pizza or fried chicken. Instead we went to TASTEastery in Fort Lee. Tasteatery is like a smaller version of Whole Foods. The food is on the healthier side and, thus, a little pricier as is to be expected. The quality is top notch though. I ordered a Cowboy Burger which consists of all natural beef, a slice of American cheese, and chipotle sauce. It also comes with baked french fries. Try it it with the A+ organic ketchup they have. They also have almost 20 kinds of all natural teas, really good salads and sandwiches, and a list of independent albums on stock (the owner is a musician). If you wanna try something different for lunch or breakfast, I highly recommend it.

It's Baaack! NYC Restaurant Week

Time to send out the mass email to friends, coworkers, and fellow foodies!

NYC Restaurant Week is back for the winter (January 18 - 23 / January 25 - 30), so make your reservations to the normally "too expensive" eateries. It's definitely a great deal, especially for the price you are paying for a delicious 3 course meal.

Mama Mia, Pizzeria...

What's the one food you can't live without? That's right, pizza. I know we've all had it way more than we should and frankly we all get tired of it. However, just like a good marriage, you keep coming back for more. (Sidenote If eating the pizza is the sex in the marriage, what does that make Pizza Hut, Domino's, etc..? Brothels. Those are not the pizzas you want to marry.)

If you feel the need for cheese, try Brooklyn's Pizza located in Hackensack, Edgewater, and Ridgewood New Jersey. Brooklyn's is more reminiscent of old school Italian pizzas in the way it is prepared. It's not bathed in toppings and everyone gets a pie. For more of an American flavor, try Fort Lee Pizzeria in, you guessed it, Fort Lee, New Jersey. Try their sausage and jalapeno pizza. It is simply amazing.

Get Fat or Settle!

Most people think that the US is the fattest nation in the world, but that is a myth. Australia is actually the heaviest nation per citizen. A report done in June showed that 26 percent of Australians are considered to be obese, narrowly edging the United States' 25 percent.

The US has never taken finishing second quietly so if you want to help the cause of increasing the US's obesity rate by 1 percentage point, here is a link to the 272 highest calorie fast food items. The top choice is White Castle's Chocolate Shake in the Louisville region with a whopping 1680 calories.

Holidays of the Day

Today is Veterans Day - take some time out today to celebrate those who have fought for our country, as well as for those who are still fighting for us today.

As for silly holidays that companies like to make up for the sake of increasing profit .. Happy Pepero Day! That's right, just as Jorge mentioned - it's one of those rare occasions when the ladies have to give their men a little gift. No need for roses or watches for your man - Pepero Day entitles men to a box of the Korean version of the [better tasting] Japanese Pocky.

As for why today is Pepero Day, take a look at the numbers: 11/11 (wow! they look like Pepero sticks!).

According to stats, Lotte makes about 55% of their annual business sales in Peppero on this date - if you don't believe this, go to your local H-Mart and TRY to get a box of Pepero .. it's most likely SOLD OUT.

(Um, is it just me or does the Pepero character looks WRONG?)
