30 Things To Do Before You're 30 (part 5)

After turning 21, the next major age milestone to look forward to (or rather, to fear), is turning 30. That big scary number that means you're officially not a kid anymore. Hell, you become a different age demographic.

Some people embrace the number, others pray it won't ever arrive. Well, we at Life in Boxes make lists for it.

If you've been following our blog for the past couple of weeks, you will have noticed that we've been going through our 30 Things To Do Before You're 30 list. Each of the editors (Jorge, Yuri, Jen, and Julia) has had a chance to submit our top five favorite things to do, and we've also asked you, our readers, for your top thing you want to accomplish before you hit the big 3-0.

Today, we finish off the list, combining some ideas from the editors and also including reader suggestions. Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are the last 10 things we want to do before we turn thirty....

10. Do Something Illegal
When you're younger than 30, you're allowed to do crazy / stupid things and blame it on being young and reckless. So on occasion, you need to use that right to do things that are... not fully lawful. I'm not saying you should rob a bank, but you know, do something that you can tell your kids about when you're old and wrinkly.

9. Do Something Charitable (submitted by Sang)
When you get older, you start getting more responsibilities and priorities in your life. It's essential, then, to take the time while you still have it to make some kind of difference in the world. Whether it's volunteering at a soup kitchen, sponsoring a child, becoming a big brother, or even joining the Peace Corps, it's great to give time and resources to a great cause when you have the chance.

8. Fill-in Your Missing Childhood Moments (submitted by Sym)
Okay, so Sym actually suggested "learn how to swim." But in reality, it's really about filling-in the parts of a typical childhood that you missed. For some, it's learning how to swim. For others, it's learning how to ride a bike. The point is that you have to fulfill childhood dreams while you are still (relatively) young.

7. Make a Million Dollars (submitted by Anonymous)
While making a million dollars before you're 30 is a lofty goal, to say the least, many of us would like to be well-off by the time we're 30. While measurements of financial success will vary between people (some people will settle for a car and a roof over their head, while others want a six-figure salary), everyone wants to be able to have enough money to live at least comfortably and happily.

6. Appear In a Movie/TV Show
How awesome would it be call your friends so they can check you out on the season finale of Heroes? Think about having people stopping you on the street and asking for your autograph. What about signing your first starring role in a blockbuster film. Or you can settle for one line in Law & Order. Whatever it takes to get that Screen Actors Guild card.

5. Make an Album
Songwriting/composing/producing is an arduous and time consuming task. The amount of self scrutiny is enough to drive a person mad. Anyone that can put 10 songs together and make it sound decent deserves some serious credit. It may be a piece of crap to the rest of the world, but to the creator it is nothing short of brilliance.

4. Travel the World (submitted by Carrie)
A lot of people do not have the chance to go backpacking across Europe or even visit the other side of the coast. But after you graduate from college, you start saving up money for attainable goals, whether it's for a new car, to move out, or go on very much needed vacations to see the world. This ties in with Yuri's road trip, Jen's trip to London, and Julia's goal to visit all 50 states, but to sum it all up, traveling is definitely on the itinerary for something to do before turning 30.

3. Be Part of a Wedding Party
Whether if it's as the bride, groom, best man, maid of honor, a groomsman, or a bridesmaid, being part of a wedding party is an altogether exciting experience to share with loved ones. You not only learn the ropes of what goes on in putting a wedding together, but you get to witness what love (or something like it) can lead to in a relationship.

2. Start a Blog
The editors of Life in Boxes know all too well the fun and sweat that go into writing for and maintaining a blog. While we may not be the next Perez Hilton or Matt Drudge, we genuinely enjoy blogging about relevant issues in pop culture and society, and connecting with readers through our writing. Starting your own blog can be a great way to write about everything from the things you enjoy (or hate) and want others to know about, or to recap your very exciting life in one simple click-and-publish routine. Don't be discouraged if you have very few readers at first (you, your friends, your mom), as everyone has humble beginnings. Who knows, maybe you will be the next Perez or Drudge!

1. Be Satisfied with the Choices You Make (or Decide What To Do With Your Life)
Many people who recently graduate from college have no idea what to do with their lives. Hopefully by the time the big 3-0 comes around, they will at least have some sort of direction in life. Right now, the possibilities seem endless - sticking with what you've got, finding something better, going to grad school, ... - the list can go on and on. The important this is that by the time your 30 you know what you want.

30 Things To Do Before You're 30 (part 4)

15. Visit all 50 states.
Call me crazy, but I really want to get this one off of my list. I think it's kind of cool and weird that each state is pretty much their own when it comes to certain laws and culture, so visiting each and every one of the 50 states in the country seems like a really interesting thing to do. And the idea of getting a souvenir from every state would be kind of cool, too. And thanks to summer Fridays and these super cheap buses with free wifi, methinks it is attainable!

14. Move out.
Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I am dying to move out. It sucks trying to be more adult-like in my decisions, choosing to endure living under the same roof as my traditionally-wack Korean parents and less than stellar siblings, but I hope to move out to be on my own before 30. Probably one of my more realistic goals, but really, with the economy being all bad, I know a few people nearing their 30's who are still living with their parents, either by choice or because of no choice.

13. Live in a different state (out of my comfort zone).
Living at home with the parents really makes you think about moving; in my case, it makes me think about moving FAR. But growing up in my little comfort zone of North Jersey, I'd prefer to live in a city, or at least a place close to a city. My top picks are either [obviously] NYC (hey, living near the city and working in the city is TOTALLY different from living there!), San Francisco, .. maybe Seattle? As long as there are more people than cows/wildlife, I should be good to go.

12. Throw a dinner party.
I LOVE Ikea (yeah, very "college-furniture" of me), Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware. I secretly plan the day of my escape from the parents (wow, hundredth time I've mentioned it), and secretly designing the perfect place for myself, inside of my head. One of the very first things I'd like to do once I've moved out and settled in my own humble abode is to throw a dinner party for a few of my closest friends. I imagine a beautifully set, candle-lit table with AT LEAST a three-course meal. Le sigh. Soon, Julia, soon ..

11. Meet someone I admire.
J.K. Rowling. Al Gore. Wes Anderson. Tina Fey. I would do ANYTHING to meet one of them. And I hope that sometime before I hit the big 3-0, I can meet at least one of them. I've already got it all planned out: JK will give me advice on how to be a satisfied writer, Al Gore and I will talk about how people born on March 31st are zee awesomest, Wes Anderson and I will talk cinema, and Tina Fey and I will co-write a hit new tv show.

30 Things to do Before You're 30 (part 3)

20. Run a race.
This was originally supposed to be one of my goals for 08, and it sort of still is, but I'm giving myself until 30 to actually become serious about it. I'm not going to run a marathon or anything; I know me too well to try to convince myself running 26.2 miles is something I can, or want to, do. Just a simple 5K is good enough for me, and I need to start training for this, namely pounding the pavement, rather than the treadmill. But I will do this, and I expect the Life in Box-ers to come cheer me on.

19. Learn how to ride a bike.
True story, when I was little, every time my dad tried taking the training wheels off my bike, I put up such a protest (crying, screaming, kicking) that eventually he gave up. And I was secretly happy. This should tell you a couple of things about me: I like being in control, and I'm a huge scaredy cat. While it was me who was victorious that year, I have come to the conclusion that not knowing how to ride a bike at my age makes me somewhat of a non-winner. I don't really expect to be biking crazy trails or go off-roading or whatever, but I think I'm ready to give it another go, if someone's willing and patient enough to teach me. Takers?

18. Write a short story/screenplay/something.
I don't mean for this to sound like I need to be a published writer, because that's not what I care about. I mean, yes, it would be nice for someone to read my work and want to publish it for other people to read it, but really, all I want to do is to sit down, formulate a vision/plot for an interesting story, and write it out. I LOVED my screenwriting class senior year and I was actually ok at it, and if I EVER go to grad school (so highly unlikely), I would probably do it for creative writing. Alas, real life and laziness got in the way of me writing, but I'd really like to finish out a writing project to prove that I can do it.

17. Visit London.
I'm totally fascinated with the British culture, I don't know why. And I MUST visit London to satisfy this craving. I'd like to preferably go around Christmas time (very Love Actually-esque), and barring we play our financial cards right, Julia and I just might this year. Might. I cannot wait to go to the Tate Modern, and see in person one of my favorite paintings of all time: The Arnolfini Portrait.

16. Get a tattoo.
I think I need to move out of my house before I do this, but I'd like to get a small tattoo. It is going to be a star on my foot, which I heard is uber painful, but it's the only part of my body I want a tattoo on, so I'll just have to bear it. My college roommate Stella and I used to draw our tattoos on with Sharpies to see how it would look, and I thought mine was really cool. Maybe for my 25th birthday...

30 Things to do Before You're 30 (part 2)

25. Go on a Road Trip
Get some friends, pack a car, and hit the road. It doesn't really matter where you're going, just that you enjoy the ride there. A road trip can be pretty cheap and full of shady truck stops, flat tires, and sleeping in car adventures!

24. Eat at a Ridiculously Expensive Restaurant
Everyone needs to experience going into a super fancy restaurant and ordering a $300 Kobe steak without batting an eye. Not only will it make you feel like a baller, but you'll be able to get a small taste (no pun intended) of how it feels like to be rich.

If you're feeling particularly daring, visit Japan and try some fugu.

23. Visit Your Home Country
No matter who you are or what color your skin is, (unless you're Native American), you're not from this country. So take some time out to make a pilgrimage back to your home country. You know, go to your roots.

Since I'm a Korean born in Brazil, I have double the trips to go to.

22. Go Bungee Jumping
Bungee jumping is an extreme sport that requires very little effort. It's not like surfing, where you need to learn how to do stuff, or like skydiving where you can... die more. It's a simple leap of faith that gets your adrenaline pumping. It's definitely one of the big things I want to do before I turn 30. Because who knows, after 30, bungee jumping might be too much adrenaline for you to handle.

21. See Your Favorite Artist in Concert
The next time your favorite singer/band/rapper goes on tour, don't miss your chance to see them. Experiencing an artist live is so much more exciting then just listening to them on your ipod. What's more, if the concert is amazing, you'll be able to tell your kids about it when you're older.

For these reasons, I extremely sad that I didn't go see Kanye's Glow in the Dark tour.

30 Things to do Before You're 30 (part 1)

30. Learn Korean.
While I was half asleep in the back of some conference once, I heard some guy say that it will be essential for the future business leaders to know at least one Asian language. Very true Asian dude. Also, if you live in the USA/Western Hemisphere, learn to speak Spanish.

29. Learn French
French is roughly the 10th most spoken language in the world but is number one in helping you get a date. Even faking the accent is good enough sometimes.

28. Drive Stick
My mom thinks that manual is an ancient technology and will slowly go the way of the dinosaurs. Mayhaps, or maybe only the cool kids are doing it. Am I that insecure? YES!

27. Learn to Dance
Yes, I am Latino. No, I do not know how to dance. Thing is, rhythm doesn't come naturally to me (watch me try to clap in rhythm if you ever want to have fun). However, as a young boy I was smitten by the GAP commercial in which everyone is swing dancing. I want to jump and hang in the air for a couple of seconds while the camera does the Matrix effect too!

26. Learn to Cook
This is more of a survival thing. I kid you not, I did not bring a single utensil or plate to college and I was not on the meal plan. Eating out everyday (HA!) gets expensive. I'd like to think that in the near future I could feed myself without depending on a Pizzeria. I just hope I don't set the house on fire in the process.
