A Tattoo To Show Off

Audrey McCombs, a girl obsessed with The Beatles and especially Paul McCartney, went to one of his shows, holding up a sign that read "Paul, sign my arm so I can get it tattooed!" Being quite the gentleman he is, he called her on-stage to sign her arm.

Girl got exactly what she wanted:

Britney Spears back on tour!

If I were to... say, have gone to 2 Britney Spears concerts this year, would that make me a crazy superfan? Would you be embarrassed to know me? Hmm. Do I really care at this point? Not really.

This morning's BREAKING NEWS (yes, this is what I consider important news) is that Britney is coming back to North America in August after she finishes her tour in Europe. While I worry that she is burning out, having been on tour for 6 months, I kinda am selfish and want more. (Gimme, gimme, more!!) And seeing how she's booked for 2 nights at Madison Sq. Garden, I can probably add one of those nights to my list of to-dos for the summer. Britney, pat yourself on the back for being the highest grossing tour of 09 so far!

Here are the tour dates, the tickets go on sale next Friday the 19th! YESS.

Review: Britney Spears: The Circus Tour

Britney Spears: The Circus Tour 2009
The Prudential Center, Newark NJ.
3.14.09
Opening Act: The Pussycat Dolls

Ok so this past Saturday was the event I have been waiting for for so long, the comeback tour of Ms. B. Spears. My friends and I had purchased tickets the morning they went on sale, I had a countdown going, so I was beyond words excited when the day finally came. After spending $40 on parking, being sad about the General Admissions "seating"/being split up, and just being confuzzled by all the girls who showed up LOOKING like Britney (girls, you're here to see her, not be like her), the show began.

The Pussycat Dolls are opening for Britney on this tour, and I can't think of a better combination. Both are extremely hot, extremely pop, and extremely Top 40. I was thoroughly impressed by the PCD, who sang and danced their way around the stage singing all of their hits - Beep, I Hate This Part, Buttons, Dont Cha, etc. They were uber entertaining, they were pretty good live, and really HOT. Oh, and they also sang their newest single, their version of the Oscar winning song from Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho. Here is the music video. And girls, it's called 'Jai Ho,' NOT 'Jay-Ho,' ok? Thanks. But as great as the PCD were, they knew they were filler for the REAL show. They kept saying, 'Are you guys excited for Britney??' UM A HELLLS YEAH?!?

So after their 40 minute set, a 15 minute break, and a 10 minute Circus warmup act, the event started. OMG. OMG. She came reigning down from the sky and sang Circus, and I was gone from there. Set list here. The freakin concert, and I'm not just saying this as a HUGE fan, is pretty amazing. It's music you know and love (come on, Britney has a discography any pop artist can envy), it's a show stopping eye-fest of costume changes (my favorite is the one on the left- naughty!), hard hitting dancing, pyrotechnics and fire, and one ringleader named Britney. She looks fantastic, she sounds fantastic (cause she lip syncs the WHOLE thing, ha!), she is back. Could she have danced a bit harder? Certainly. Could she have actually pretended to sing some parts live? Surely. But IT'S BRITNEY, BITCH!! The reigning princess of pop puts on an unbelievable show, and reaffirms that she is a talented performer. She deserves that much.

So all you haters to the left. Britney is back, and I CANNOT wait for this next chapter in her career to unfold. I'm counting down for the next tour.

Artist of the Day: James Morrison

I had the privilege of seeing the very hot very talented James Morrison last night at the Highline Ballroom. This was awesome for a variety of reasons, one of which being he tours Europe a lot, but stateside, not so much. Now, I've been to a looooot of shows, but I have to say, the James Morrison show was my best "seat" ever. Ever. I put seats in quotes cause we were technically standing, but we were standing right in front of the stage. A) My neck hurt from staring up at him, B) There was no need to excessively zoom in to get a good shot of him from my camera, and C) I was afraid I was going to get hit by a spray of spit everytime he sang. Does that give you an idea of how close we were to him??

Anyways, James Morrison is so cute and so good live. He has a really husky voice that works so well in his heartbreaking songs. He's released 2 albums so far, his debut Undiscovered, and his latest effort- Songs For You, Truths For Me. He played songs from both albums, and it was so awesome when everyone started singing along to the favorites. Great stuff.

Here are some of my favorites:

Vampire Weekend Concert Review

Thursday, December 4, 2008. 7PM at Terminal 5, NYC.

After an exhausting week-long trip to Seattle, the last thing I wanted to do was go to a show on a rainy night in the city (seriously, rain in Seattle really did it for me). Because fellow LiB writer Jen and I had purchased tickets about 3 months in advance, it was one of those things that sounded awesome at the time .. but as the date drew near, I was regretting such an early commitment.

My ears hurt that night .. from the AWESOMENESS that was Vampire Weekend.

Sure, the waiting was a bit long (VW got on stage at 9:10PM), and the opening act was very .. unique (anyone hear of Telepathe?), but nonetheless, VW was amazing in concert. Their energy on stage was viral, and the crowd was really feeling it.

The highlight of the show was when they brought out a string quartet to accompany them on songs from their debut album. Favorites of the night included "I Stand Corrected," "M79," "A-Punk," and of course, "Oxford Comma." And though I've yet to see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, hearing VW's song from the soundtrack ("Ottoman") was awesome in its own.

I definitely recommend people to see them live. Sure, their sound is a bit funky, but after dragging along a friend who a) had never heard of them before, b) has questionable taste in music, and c)is not really a fan of indie music .. he LOVED them. He bought the album the very next day, and has been obsessing over "M79."

And if you still haven't tried listening to Vampire Weekend, I definitely recommend them.

Death Cab for Cutie @ Radio City Concert Review

Death Cab for Cutie @ Radio City Music Hall, NY, NY. Monday, October 6, 2008, 8PM.

Last night, I had the most awesome and not so awesome concert experience of my life. The awesome- my favorite band Death Cab for Cutie's show at the spectacular venue that is Radio City. The not so awesome- having my concert buddy back out on me at the last minute (though he had a good reason), leaving me to attend the concert by myself. Ok, so I've always kinda wanted to go to a movie by myself. A concert at a major venue with thousands of people? Not so much. But surprisingly, it wasn't a bad experience. And that has a lot to do with the show that Death Cab put on.

I've never seen them in person, and with the seats I had, I can't really say that I know what they look like. =P But, once I got over the fact that I had an empty seat next to me, I got really into it. If you know Death Cab only through their albums, I think you'd be surprised at the amount of energy they bring to the stage. I would say that most of their songs are quiet. On stage, however, the songs are played louder and with more intensity than their catalog lets on. The lead singer Ben Gibbard exudes restless energy, jumping from his guitar to keyboard and back and forth. The songs are louder, more intense, and rock-ier than the recorded versions on the albums. I mean, this might have to do with the fact that Radio City is a HUGE venue, the biggest they've played in NY, and they needed to exude that sort of energy to reach people like me, all the way in the third mezzanine.

I was pleasantly surprised that they played a lot of old stuff. Some of my favorites, in fact. The New Year, Summer Skin, I Will Follow You into the Dark (solo performance by Ben, and with the whole 1000+ audience singing along to it, so amazing), Transatlanticism, The Sound of Settling, and my FAVORITE, Marching Bands of Manhattan. They of course also played songs from their new album Narrow Stairs, which included I Will Possess Your Heart (the crowd really went wild for this one), Bixby Canyon Bridge, Cath, Long Division. The ONLY thing I was sad about was that they didn't play Pity & Fear, which is my favorite song from the new album.

Also, I don't think many artists come out for an encore and play a 5-song set. I was sad when it ended, but didn't realize they'd be playing for another 20 minutes during the encore. It was like a second concert! Would I do it again, if I had to go to another one by myself? For Death Cab, absolutely. I hope you guys check out their stuff, especially their Plans album, which consistently gets played on my iPod. Maybe next time I'll have more people to go see them with?? :)

Summer concert series

The weather's getting nicer, so that only means one thing, summer's almost here! And with that comes tons of outdoor events, most of which are free and open to the public. I've been on a big concert kick lately (there's nothing like seeing artists you like perform live), and with my love for nice weather and for concerts, I'm making it my mission to attend at least one outdoor concert this summer. Thankfully, rival morning shows TODAY and Good Morning America host a series of concerts during the summer, with a slew of awesome artists booked and ready to rock&roll. The only catch is that you have to be there at ungodly hours to ensure a spot to watch them perform, but it's a small price to pay for free entertainment, right?

NBC's TODAY Concert Series Lineup

ABC's Good Morning America Concert Series Lineup

As for me,
One word: Coldplay.
Two words: June 27. (ok, I know that's actually not 2 words)
Three words: I'm so there.
Four words: Who else is in??

Ok, I know I'm being super annoying. But, um, it's COLDPLAY, my favorite band ever. I don't enjoy waking up in the morning when it's still super dark outside, but did I mention it's Coldplay?? The last time I did something crazy like that was September 06, when my boyfriend (aka John Krasinski from the Office) and actress Jenna Fischer were on TODAY to promote the season 3 premiere of the show.

They had a scheduled DVD signing at the NBC store across the street right after the interview, and even though I already owned the DVDs, I followed them there like a stalker. And while everyone else was at the signing to get DVDs signed, I just stood there and took tons of pictures like a creep-o. Whatever! In my defense, there were a handful of other people doing the same exact thing I was doing (and yes, the restraining order has been lifted). Unfortunately, I got like 4 good shots of the 100s I took, cause I'm an idiot and don't know how to work my camera. Things will be different this time around. Here I come, Chris Martin!

Jason Mraz Concert Review

Jason Mraz - Music, Magic, Make Peace tour with Bushwalla, Justin Kredible, and the MakePeace Brothers. Sunday, April 13, 2008. 7PM at World Live Cafe, Philly PA.
If you are a music lover, and you like live performances, the one thing you must do in your lifetime is see Jason Mraz live. I'm not kidding when I say he is one of the best artists to see live, and his strength as an artist really lies in the shows he puts on. I've seen him about 3 times now, and I have to say, the April 2008 Music, Magic, Make Peace tour is my favorite show of his. Tickets are probably hard to come by at this point because he literally sells out every show within minutes of them going on sale, but if you do get a chance to catch it, you're in for an awesome time.

Opening Acts:
The MakePeace Brothers opened the show, and they are a folk quartet (though they were a trio this particular night) of real-life brothers who are all very cute. Their music was good, and they played 6 songs, including the inspiring "Hero," which you can check out on their website. The very entertaining freestyle acoustic rapper Bushwalla performed 7 songs, and having been on tour with Mraz before, much of the audience was very familiar with him and his songs.

In between all acts, the magician-comedian Justin Kredible performed little vignettes of magic/comedy. He was actually really good, and kept his routine interactive by using audience members in his acts. He is also very cute, and one of the highlights of the night was getting to meet him. This whole comic routine between sets was actually a really good idea, as it kept the flow of the show going, and the audience engaged in those lagging times.

Jason Mraz:
After what seemed like hours of waiting and people pushing us around (it was a standing room venue), Mraz finally took the stage
with his trusty sidekick Toca. He opened with Plane, one of my faves from the Mr. A-Z album, and minus Geek in the Pink and a slew of other songs from the olden days, he mostly stuck to new material from his upcoming album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things (out 5/13). Even though he said he was congested, he sounded amazing, and of course, he is the king of improvisation, which he liberally exercised in his set. He was chatty and charming, and what I love about him is that he's still incredibly gracious and humbled by people coming to see him. He played about 14 songs in total, and when he launched into I'm Yours towards the end, we all went crazy.

And after that long set (about an hour and a half), he came back to perform an encore with everybody from his tour, which was awesome in itself, but after that fun performance ended, he stuck around to perform You and I Both solo, which the entire audience sang along to. Mraz, his guitar, the audience's energy= AMAZING. My boy is back!!!

Spice Girls Concert Review

Monday, February 18, 2008. 8PM at Madison Square Garden, NYC.

First off, anyone who knows me can tell you that the last concert you'd expect me to review is that of the Spice Girls. But I'll be the first to admit it: yes, in my shameful 6th grade past, I enjoyed the girl-power jams by this power-pop group. I thought that I had left that dark part of my past behind me, but a surprise early birthday gift to see the 5 gals in concert left me with no shame at the end.

As mentioned earlier, I was at complete shock to be sitting in MSG at the Spice Girls concert. From what I saw and heard, tickets sold out like hotcakes, and the seats I sat at were pretty decent (thanks again, Jannie!).

Of course, after becoming a mega part of 90's pop culture, the Spice Girls have a huuuge [and obsessive] fan-base. I saw girls my age and older wearing clothes that they shouldn't be wearing, with their undies showing like they were Paris Hilton or something. Anything from skin-tight, Union Flag designed bodysuits to sequined short dresses seemed to be the attire of the night (I felt so out of place with my skinny jeans, a nice shirt I recently bought, and boots - and that was me being dressed nicely!). In the vast sea of estrogen, there were a few guys who were either hardcore fans or there to [ironically] hit on these female fans who so ardently sang along to the Spice Girls' songs of female power. I actually saw a guy pointedly take a picture of one of the scantily clad girl's butt!

The actual show in itself was very entertaining and enjoyable. And yes, this comes from a not-so-crazed fan. The Spice Girls were all at the top of their game, looking good and sounding even better live. But when it all came down to it, Sporty Spice really blew my mind with her vocal range - damn, she can sing! If I learned anything from that concert, it was that Sporty Spice has got an amazing voice; she sang in most of the sets, and seemed to carry the songs.

By now, everyone probably has read about at least one leg of the Spice Girls tour. Yes, they performed all of their hit songs and more. Yes, Posh does a runway walk; Sporty sang "I Turn To You"; Ginger sang "It's Raining Men." And yes, the girls brought up all their children when singing "Mama." But what made this NYC show different was Posh's youngest son, Cruz, breaking it down on stage. He literally boogied down, causing the girls to stop singing 'cause they were watching/laughing at the little Spice kid imitate moves as if he were a NYC street performer. Definitely a cute, memorable moment.

Also, when Posh's kids were leaving the stage, it was funny to see the eldest Beckham child using his wheelies (those sneakers with wheels in the heel part) to glide across the stage.

All in all, the Spice Girls concert was definitely a great treat. Whether you were a fan or not, there's no denying that these girls (well, women, now) have talent as entertainers. They've got the voices, the looks, the dances, and the cute little break-dancing babies that make for an awesome show.

Kelly Clarkson Concert Review

Tuesday, October 16, 2007. 8PM at the Beacon Theater, NYC.

The stage set-up for Kelly Clarkson wasn't spectacular; it was pretty much set up like her latest album art, "My December." The lighting in the theater and overall acoustics of the theater was mediocre, too. But that was all easily forgotten when Kelly Clarkson performed.

I was pretty pleased to hear her songs off her past albums, and was satisfied with a few from "My December." My only complaint about "My December" is that a good portion of her upbeat songs are very .. moody - imagine a teenage girl writing in her journal about her scumbag of a boyfriend. But Ms. Clarkson admitted that she was in an angsty mood when writing songs.

The interaction between her and the audience was great. Midway through "Because of You," the crowd cheered her on for a good 5 minutes, that she actually had to stop midway to acknowledge her fans' support. After finishing the song, she wiped tears from her eyes in appreciation for the love that the audience was showing her.

The refreshing thing about Kelly Clarkson is that what you see is what you get. She didn't shy away from the little known fact about her ability to out-drink grown men. She told the audience about her infamous youtube video and how she came to write "Chivas" (a hidden track in "My December") after bumping into an old ex at a bar. Shortly after, she took a swig of Chivas Regal from a small bottle and went on to perform the song.

I'm definitely glad that I didn't pass up a chance to see her perform. Whether you're a fan of Kelly Clarkson or not, it's hard not to admire her talents as a singer.
