People's Sexiest Man Alive 2009

Aaaand the coveted title goes to.. Johnny Depp?? Do not get me wrong, I too am a fan of Mr. Depp, but.. he hasn't really done much in the past year, no? The title usually goes to someone who is HOT as well as been in the spotlight for the year. But.. Whatever. My pick for Sexiest Man (ever...) Robert Pattinson, made the cut, as well as Ryan Reynolds, the cast of Glee (gleeeeee!!!), and uber hottie John Cho. YES. As a hot blooded female I love this annual issue of People.

Over at Best Week Ever, my favorite blogger Michelle Collins analyzes the Top 15 in her usual hilarious way. She laments the fact that her favorite, Mad Men's Jon Hamm, failed to make the cut, so she rates each of People's picks with... Hamms. It's pretty hilarious. She also gets major points from me for acknowledging the HOTNESS of Daniel Henney, who didn't make People's cut, but we both think he is a Hottie McHottie. Yeaaaa boyeeee!

I love NY Mag, especially when they put out their special annual issues- Summer in NYC, Fall Fashion, and my favorite, Cheap Eats. The 2008 edition of Cheap Eats hit the newstands yesterday, and as a (cheap) foodie, I'm pretty excited. I'm really not one to spend tons on food (I honestly would rather spend my money at J.Crew, but that's another story...), so I really appreciate good quality food for decent price. In addition to the usual list of the best of the best cheap foods in the city (everything from burgers to arepas to thai), there's also a little comparison chart on how food prices have risen this year as well as the 10 best things to eat in NYC for $5 or under. July's almost over, folks, meaning summer's already halfway gone. Can't think of a better way to spend 90 degrees plus days than seeking out cheap eats with good company.

Entertainment Service of the Day: Maghound

One of my favorite entertainment-related things in the world is Netflix. For a small monthly price, you get your choice of DVD(s) when you want them, and you can keep them for however long you want. Since its inception, we've seen other online rental/swapping services (books, videogames, etc), but nothing has piqued my attention like Maghound, set to launch in September. The brainchild of Time Inc, the service will work the same way as Netflix does, but with magazines. For about $5/mo, you get 3 mags, from their collection of 300 titles so far. Of course, you'll pay more if you want more titles per month, but considering one magazine costs around $5 at the newsstands, this is a great deal. I'm excited because I usually buy magazines based on the cover model/feature stories anyway, and so not being locked into a subscription with one title is awesome. And hopefully, this will revive the fast-declining magazine industry, or at least give it a boost. Sign up at Maghound to be notified of when the site and service go live.

The Power of the Internet: Free Magazines

Little known fact about me: I have a subscription to Maxim until the end of time, and I haven't paid a single cent.

How? All you have to do is visit deals sites (I personally use Slickdeals), which have forums dedicated to this kind of stuff.

If you're patient enough, you can find free subscriptions to lots of popular mags (Wired, EGM, Lucky, Nylon, etc) or extremely lower prices for expensive magazines (I got 1 year of Time for $5).

Oh, and if you're worried about these being scams, you have to understand how magazines make money. They don't make it off of readers, they make it off of advertisers. These companies give out subscriptions so the magazine can turn to an advertiser and say, "look, we have 300,000 readers, you should give us more money to put your ad in our mag." Thus, they want people to subscribe.
