It's Here: The Eclipse Trailer
Oprah premiered the Eclipse trailer on her show yesterday (surrounded by Twihards - what was she thinking??):
A few things to note:
-I really really dislike seeing Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria.
-RPattz is looking more and more sickly as Edward. New makeup artist, please.
-The army of "young" vampires coming out of the water reminded me of zombies.
-I think that the entire time I see the movie, I will either be looking at Kristen Stewart's bad wig or ..
-Taylor Lautner's abs FTW.

Taylor Lautner is HAWT!
New Moon is probably my 2nd favorite book in the Twilight series (the first being Twilight, duh!). When I heard all the drama about the casting for Jacob Black in New Moon, I was all for Taylor Lautner, because I felt bad for the poor kid; afterall, his tv show gig (My Own Worst Enemy) did get canceled .. and losing the role of Jacob Black would've been devastating for his career.
But Taylor Lautner hung in there, and worked his ass off to show Stephenie Meyer, newly appointed director Chris Weitz, and the Twilight fans that he could maintain the role. And damn, that kid must've really wanted the job.
However, now that it's all official, I'm left wondering if Taylor Lautner can do justice to the character of Jacob Black (link may contain spoilers!). Sure, he's got the boyish looks and charms for the first film, and now the muscle and brawn for the second film .. but can he really do it? Looks like winning the role was just half the battle, but maybe he could prove fans and critics wrong, just as co-star Robert Pattinson did.

2008 Entertainers of the Year: 2) The Twilight Phenomenon
Much has already been discussed on this blog about the Twilight series, both the books and the film. For restoring interest in reading again, the Entertainer of the Year title goes to the 4 books that make up the Twilight series: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. For the author who created the most talked about fictional characters we've seen in awhile, the Entertainer of the Year title goes to Stephenie Meyer. For the actors who made those characters come to life on the big screen and made tween girls squeal with delight, the Entertainer of the Year title goes to Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and the rest of the Twilight cast. And for the millions of teen girls, not-so-teen-anymore girls, and everyone else who took part in the phenomenon, the Entertainer of the Year title also goes to you. You can see where I'm going with this? Collectively, everyone and everything involved with Twilight mania is my pick for 2008 Entertainer of the Year #2 spot.
The Twilight phenomenon is actually nothing new, but it reached its peak in 2008. The first book was published back in 2005 to a lot of fanfare, leading to 3 sequels, the last of which was released this past August to a frenzy. Books don't usually drive people in droves to to their nearest bookstore, so the fact that the last book in the series, Breaking Dawn, sold 1.3 million copies in the first day of its release is super impressive. And of course, we had the film version of Twilight, which also broke all kinds of crazy records when it was released in November. By mid-December, Twilight has grossed over $175 million. It has also made superstars out of the young cast, especially Robert Pattinson, who made girls all over the country swoon and faint with his every move, and who now regularly graces the pages of US Weekly and other tabloids.
It doesn't look like the Twilight mania will die down anytime soon in 2009. Production/filming of the second movie, New Moon, is set to begin in March, with a goal of a November release. With director/cast shakeups already, the film is going to be much talked about throughout the year even before it is released. So, Twilight fans, congratulations on being a part of a huge pop culture phenomenon, and see you back here next year!

Things I Love Update: Harry Potter, Twilight
After all that drama with New Moon's upcoming production (as well as the issue about recasting the role of Jacob Black), I just want them to start production already! But it'll be a lot riding on Chris Weitz's back, especially since the Twilight series are considered to be more for girls, and if he effs it up, a whole army of Twilight fans will be sure to make his life a living hell..

Song of the Day: Muse - Supermassive Black Hole
If you've been reading this blog for the past couple of weeks, you know that I have been obsessed with 2 things as of late: Twilight and Britney Spears. I've probably listened to Britney's album nonstop for the past week (she has the #1 album this week, with over 500,000 copies sold, that is MY GIRL!!!). When I'm not listening to Britney, I am listening to the Twilight soundtrack, which is actually a pretty great compilation. Julia wrote about her love for one of the songs on the album, Iron & Wine's beautiful Flightless Bird, American Mouth. I want to recommend my favorite song on the album, Muse's Supermassive Black Hole. The song is used in the baseball scene in Twilight, which is like the greatest use of this song ever. I love Muse, an English rock band who I don't think many Americans know about. Hysteria is one of my favorite songs EVER and like my favorite song to run to, I think their cover of the otherwise annoying Can't Take My Eyes Off You is pretty awesome, and I just love their overall sound. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is always citing them as a huge inspiration in her writing, calling them her muse (get it???). I love the name! I love the band! I love this song!!

What a [Twilight] weekend!

Am I the only one disappointed with the slew of headlines regarding the success of Twilight at the box office? I would've imagined, with its vampire theme, you would've seen a lot more of the following:
"Twilight slays competition at the box office"
"Twilight drains the life out of its competitors"
"Twilight makes a killing this weekend"
"Twilight sinks teeth into the box office"
There's so much to work with here! Copywriters, I am disappointed. Anyways, so uh, have you heard the news? Despite some sucky reviews, Twilight pulled in over $70 million this weekend, shattering all expectations. It became the #1 opener for a vampire movie of all time, the biggest opener for a female-directed movie, and made more than Transformers did on its opening weekend last year ($70.5 vs. Twilight's $70.6). Considering the movie pulled in types of crowd who don't normally go out to the movies in droves - women (75% of the audience) and the young (55% of the audience were under 25), those are some AMAZING numbers."Twilight drains the life out of its competitors"

As for my review... Well, I definitely don't recommend the movie to you if you haven't read the book. There are some things the movie does better than the book (cutting out unnecessary and repetitive scenes, pacing the action/suspense throughout, UM the casting of Robert Pattinson), but I think to truly understand the intense relationship of the 2 main characters, as well as to appreciate the cheesiness of the dialogue, reading the book first is best. And as with any book-to-movie adaptations, there are certain things that can never live up to what you imagined it would be like (in Twilight's case, 2 words: sparkling skin). So, I give Twilight a B-. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it very much. I'm just being objective here.
And as proud as I am that a female director made the film, being not a fan of her work in general (I kinda hated Thirteen), I hope that the next one is made by someone other than Catherine Hardwicke. Maybe then we can move away from emo teen angst (though, I guess it is fair to say that Twilight is a bit emo teen angst) and more action, Blockbuster, big budget film making. Oh, and duh, MORE R.PATTINSON!! One more thing, check this NYMag slideshow out, probably my favorite thing written on this subject.

Hottie of the Day: Robert Pattinson
Every once in awhile, I get completely obsessed with a male celebrity. When I say obsessed, I mean like recording every interview, reading every article, buying every magazine with said celebrity. The list of people who I think are hot is pretty long, but these special men have very special places in my heart, and there are only a handful of them. Michael Vartan (of Alias and Never Been Kissed fame) is my first celebrity boyfriend, John Krasinski (of The Office) is my 'I'm SO marrying him' celebrity boyfriend, and you can now add British HOTTIE Robert Pattinson (of Twilight and Harry Potter films) to my celebrity boyfriend list.
I don't think anyone would have been quite prepared for the insane-ness that the upcoming release of Twilight has bestowed upon the actors of the film, in particular Robert. He's handling the whirlwind of publicity tours and screaming (crying/fainting) fans particularly well, I think. He's pretty gracious and thoughtful in his interviews (you know, when he doesn't look exhausted and out of it) and he seems to understand that really, the girls are screaming for the character he is playing in the movie, not necessarily for him as a person. So while I am at the height of my Robert Pattinson obsession, and while he still seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy in the midst of the fan frenzy, he is officially my Hottie of the Day (week/month/year). RPatt, FTW! :)

Twilight owns my life (and this blog)
Not to Twilight you all out, but... like Julia mentioned, I too, have become a pretty big Twilight fan. We like to introduce each other to stuff we can't live without- I introduced her to How I Met Your Mother/High School Musical, she introduced me to...the Twilight phenomenon. Yes, I still feel weird saying out loud, "hey, this vampire love stuff is really entertaining!" I mean how much more lamer can you get? But, folks, it SO is entertaining. And the thing is, Julia and I are far from being the only ones who are into it. Sold out mall tours, fainting fans, basically everything you would equate with like a pop act like the BSB or NSYNC in their heyday mania is... Twilight. The upcoming release of the film version of Twilight (this Friday, Nov. 21!) has got teenage (and not so teenage) girls and boys in a tizzy.
I like entertainment/pop culture facts and figures like boys like sports statistics, so let's examine the phenomenon in numbers, shall we:
* Twilight (2005), New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007), and Breaking Dawn (2008) (the 4 books in the series) have sold over 17 million copies worldwide, in 37 countries.
* Breaking Dawn, the 4th and most recent, sold 1.3 million copies on the FIRST day of its release.
* For this weekend's film release, Fandango has already sold out almost 700 shows -- including 500 or so midnight Thursday screenings, and MovieTickets counted more than 400 sellouts of various showtimes.
* Twilight accounted for more than 85% of presales in recent days (me and Julia included, we purchased our tickets for Friday)
* Director Catherine Hardwick estimates the movie needs to make at least $150 million for the studio to consider making a sequel. Many people in the industry believe a $40 million-plus opening is a given, $50 million or more is quite possible, even $60 million is ambitious but doable.
SO, COME ON FELLOW TEENYBOPPERS, let's go show Hollywood how powerful we can be! I am confident we will be seeing a sequel. T-3!!
Mania of the Day (well, OF THE WEEK): Twilight
Oh, Twilight. I resisted your charm. I was unknowingly there, at the release party for Breaking Dawn back in August, and scoffed at the fake vampire tattoos that your many fans adorned. I wrinkled my nose in disgust when people started comparing the series to that of Harry Potter. I did not know, and if anything, the idea of a vampire novel kept me away.
But now I know. And awesomely enough, I've spread my love for the series to many other friends, who in turn, have done the same to their friends.
Twilight-mania continues to sweep across the country, with the cast closing down on their Hot Topic tour as the premiere approaches. Buy your tickets in advance, and get there early, ya'll - it's going to be pretty EPIC.
Not to mention that the latest trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (yes, there's a NEW trailer!) will be shown before the Twilight movie.

Obsession of the Week: Twilight Series
Yes, I've gone to the dark side.
After hearing about this particular series for months, I finally gave in. It was innocent - curiosity got the best of me. I had nothing else to read, the current book I was reading was mindless (augh, it got so bad that I started reading chick lit!) .. and then I was hooked.
I actually feel a bit ashamed for admitting to it because a) it's about vampires. I mean, not really cool (especially from a girl who loves the Harry Potter series, in all its wizardly goodness). And b) this was the book that people have been calling the "new" Harry Potter series! I was appalled. Nothing could compare.
But after finishing the Twilight series, I'll admit that it was a good read. I mean, the last book didn't really draw me in as much as the first one did, but it did its job: it kept me reading. And I guess it that sense, I can see the parallel to the Harry Potter series, as it kept the reader wanting more.
But unlike the Harry Potter series, it definitely isn't a book for all - a lot more females read this book (I seriously have not met a male reader), probably because of the whole Romeo & Juliet-esque romance, with the two main characters being somewhat of a pair of star-crossed lovers. Not to say that boys won't enjoy a good romance, but in that sense, Harry Potter has its mass appeal.
Overall, the Twilight series is a good read in its own way. And that's good enough for me.

Book of the Day: Twilight
After a whole summer of rereading some oldies, but goodies, and going through mindless other books, I finally found something worth reading.
I was pretty reluctant to read Twilight, but once I started, it was hard for me to stop. I'm currently on the final book of the series, but really, the first book stood out by far for me.
And of course, it helps that the movie is coming out soon (replacing Harry Potter's original release date), and that the actor who played Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) will be playing the lead role of Edward Cullen (he was pretty hawt in the Harry Potter films, but not too sure about his chalk-white vampire look for the Twilight movie..).
