Luxury movie-going experience: worth the price??

How much would you be willing to pay for a movie?

According to this article in Variety, a group of investors is spending $200 million over the next 5 years to build 50 luxury theaters nationwide. The price of a ticket at one of these theaters? $35. What is included in that price? Reclining seats with footrests, digital projection, the capability to screen both 2-D and 3-D movies, lounges/bars serving cocktails and appetizers, concierge service, valet parking, made-to-order meals like sushi from on-site chefs, and waiter service at each seat. Of course, the purchase of food is an extra cost.

Gold Class Cinemas wouldn't be the first of its kind, as there are other theater chains offering similar services already, but at much cheaper prices: $12-18/ticket. I don't know how I feel about this. I guess I still live in the 'I'm-a-broke-college-student' mentality, because I love seeking out matinees and generally low-priced theaters. Also, because you never know if the movie you're about to watch is going to be bad, and you never want to say that you paid $35 to see the worst.movie.ever.

$70 for me and a friend? Not likely. Really can't imagine anyone finding the extra $20/person to be worth it given that the services provided are bound to be so-so (e.g. sushi in the dark?) compared to what's already available nearby.

And if you're the kind of person that just despises movie theaters crowded with riff-raff, you're bound to just watch movies in your super high-end home theater instead.

Interesting news, still.

i went to a gold class movie theater in australia and it was LOVELY!!! huuuge reclining seats, which means less people (there were seating for max. 20?) and fancy wait-staff service if you wanted (not that i did)...although it WAS 10:30am- the only time that had the main center seats available- i still lurved it.

and i didn't pay $35 although i'm pretty sure i paid about $23AUS...but it was pretty much awesome and i'd do it again maybe not for everyday but i'd definitely go to one...does this mean i'm a sucker :(
