I love creative marketing campaigns, and I think P&G is really smart to recognize a niche group watching the Olympics-- the moms. I mean, I don't relate to this commercial directly cause I'm not a mom yet, but my own mom loves this one, and she totally agrees, so I think P&G is really striking a chord. In fact, I do think this commercial is true in a lot of ways, cause even though I'm an adult in my mid-20s, my mom still gives me smooches and treats me like a kid (um, not of the weirdo, dysfunctional family kind, but in a cute way..). Anyways, as the Olympics draw to a close (not before Queen Yu-Na skates tonight!!), watch this and smile. And go hug your momma.

Figure Skating!
There was a time in my life when I used to be reallllly into figure skating (watching, NOT doing), and that was because I idolized the greatest figure skater of MY generation-- Michelle Kwan. Michelle is probably (and unfortunately so) known to many as the great skater with one accolade missing from her collection, the Olympic gold medal. However, I know her as the graceful, classy athlete who is the most decorated figure skater in the history of US skating. When Michelle stopped competing, I stopped watching. And so, I haven't been excited about figure skating, until now. Last night was the short program portion of the female figure skating competition at the Olympics, and there is a reason why it is the most watched Winter Olympic event. Drama Drama Drama! LOVES IT.
In one corner you have the world reigning champion, Yuna Kim, a 19 year old from South Korea who is not only considered the greatest figure skater skating today, but quickly cemented herself as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time. The biggest celebrity of her nation, she has the weight of Korea's expectations on her shoulders, so much so that she can't even live and train in Korea. Her match with Mao Asada, an equally talented 19 year old from Japan, is the stuff scripted dramas are made of. Both carry the weight of their country's pressure on their shoulders, both are multi-millionaire celebrities, both are expected to bring home the gold and once and for all settle the rivalry between the girls' respective nations. And if drama and rivalry aren't your things, then you have tragedy: the current 3rd place finisher, Canadian Joannie Rochette, is skating a mere 2 days after the sudden death of her mother. Emotional stuff!
Tomorrow brings the conclusion of the exciting competition, and while Yuna Kim has the commanding lead at the moment, anything can happen by tomorrow night's end. My current prediction though, mirrors the current standings at the moment:
Gold: Yuna Kim (South Korea)
Silver: Mao Asada (Japan)
Bronze: Joannie Rochette (Canada)

Super Bowl Ads: The best
As Julia said in her post last week, I too am a fan of Super Bowl ads, especially because I like anything that can hold my attention for a minute or less. I was actually pretty into the game this year (YAY Saints!), but I was on the lookout for some great commercials. I don't think I was blown away by anything this year, but the below are some of my favorites.
Google
This is my FAVORITE of last night, and one of my favorites ever, dare I say. Simple, charming, moving, and pretty much sums up the Google brand and purpose in one minute, which really is what an effective ad should be. A love story told through a series of google searches, it was incredible storytelling, and probably more romantic in that one minute than some 2 hour rom coms. Amazing. Genius. Love Love Love.
Snickers
How much do I love Betty White? For an 80 some year old, she is still a firecracker who is adorable and feisty and just plain awesome. I cracked up at this ad, in which she is battered around on the football field and gets to use the line, "That's not what your girlfriend said." Hilarious.
Bud Light
Umm. I freaking love auto-tune. I know, one of these days it will no longer be funny, but until then, I am still gonna laugh at the ridiculousness that is T-pain auto-crooning, "Pass that guacamoleeeee." HAHAHAHA.
Late Show w/David Letterman
And of course, the most talked about ad this morning is the Letterman-Leno-Oprah 10 second commercial that put the rival late-night giants in the same room. Apparently a lot went into ensuring this was kept under wraps, including Jay sneaking into the Letterman studios in full disguise to tape the spot. Totally surprising, and pretty funny.

Gettin' Psyched for Super Bowl (Ads)!
On Sunday, millions(?) of people will be huddled around their HD TVs watching two football teams play against each other to win a bowl of sorts.
No? Hm ..
I honestly had no idea that the Super Bowl was this coming weekend, until a friend asked me if I had any plans for Sunday. I told him that I don't plan for things I don't care about (sorry, football fans), but he enticed me with my one weakness: commercials. With that said, I know that I will be glued to my TV, solely for the Super Bowl ads (YEAHHHHHH!)!! Millions of dollars spent on ads during a football game between teams comprised of players who get paid millions! That's my kind of Sunday!
Entertainment Weekly did their list of 11 Best Super Bowls Ads Ever and it's getting me super psyched for the big day!
Personally, this Fedex commercial is a fave, mainly because Cast Away was such a memorable movie for me:

US Open 2009: Federer FTW, Serena .. Not So Much
In this past weekend, we've seen probably one of the coolest points ever, by the always cool and seemingly effortless Roger Federer. As mentioned in a past post, I have a huuge crush on him, and this clip just shows why Roger Federer is AMAZING:
In other US Open news, if you haven't seen the video about what got Serena Williams disqualified, then you're a total newb:

on Alex Rodriguez
Kids, there are no such things as heroes, only a few individuals that make you think someday you can be one. Alex Rodriguez was never a hero. He has not been well liked since accepting a 252 million dollar contract to play with the Texas Rangers. A lot of his former teammates don't exactly speak glowingly of him. He cares too much about his image. Fans of his own team boo him.
Yet, now people's anger towards Alex is mixed with a strong dose of disappointment. It seems weird like being upset at Darth Vader for smoking pot. The reason for this disappointment goes beyond Alex's personality. People are angry at Alex because he was baseball's great hope. He was the one who would break all the records that were broken by "dirty" players. Now, he's one of them.
Should you really be surprised? It's not the 40 and 50 home runs per season, steroids or not he's always had the ability to do that. The one consistent part of Alex's personality is that he tries too hard. He tries too hard to be liked, tries too hard to fit in, tries too hard to be great. Steroids were widespread in the game at that time and he felt it would give him an edge. Little did we know back then how it would all play out. Fans look at steroids now as everything that's wrong with baseball, but the truth is that steroids saved baseball. After the player's strike in 1995 baseball was struggling to regain fans. Then came 1998's home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa and everyone fell in love again. I think we all knew what was going on. These guys looked like linebackers not baseball players. Who cared? Games were finishing 10-9 with 4 or 5 homers per game. The stadiums were filled, TV contracts were signed, and revenues went through the roof. We all knew, but nobody wanted to admit it.
Fast forward to 2009. Alex Rodriguez took steroids. Should you be that surprised? He's no hero, but he's no villain either. He's just a baseball player. What's sad about this is that Alex probably didn't even need the steroids. He's won two MVPs since MLB instituted a steroid testing policy including one of the greatest offensive seasons in baseball history in 2007. In a couple of months Yankee fans will only care about one thing; a World Series. They know if that's going to happen they'll need A-Rod to play well. If he does, they'll forgive him. If he doesn't, they'll get creatively mean. I don't know what can be taken away from this mess. I guess Mr.T said it best, "Just Say No."

Super Bowl Sunday Recipes
Hey hey now, who is excited for the Super Bowl this year??? Yeah, me either. I don't quite know my plans as of yet, but if I don't end up doing anything, I'll totally be ok. I don't know if it's just me, but there doesn't seem to be the usual hoopla surrounding the Super Bowl this year, maybe because the Cardinals don't have many fans outside Arizona, and no one really cares about Pittsburgh (sorry if you do). I don't think anything will quite top last year's amazing Giants victory anyway.
But alas, if you are having a Super Bowl party, a) why haven't you invited me yet, I am the life of every party, and b) I found some cool recipes that you should definitely use. You are so very welcome!
Ok so I LOVE pigs in blankets. They're like the staple at every party/reception where hor' d'oeuvres are being served, right? And they're so tiny and good that you don't realize you've just had 6 of them. And subsequently, 500 calories. Which is why, instead of the usual recipe, you want to make these delicious De-Pudged Pigs in a blanket! Let me plug Hungry Girl while I'm at it, she has awesome low-fat recipes and tips she emails her loyal readers (I am one of them), and her cookbook is pretty sweet too. But yes, I've made these little pigs in blankets and they're realllly good.
And you can't have a party without guacamole! My friend The Duchess recently wrote a post about making the most delicious guacamole. And if you really want to try something new and exciting, add bacon to your guacamole. YUMMMM, I don't think you can ever go wrong with bacon.
Here are a couple more: Cheesy bread, Stuffed potato skins w/chicken, onions, and sour cream, Paula Deen's uber fattening nachos, and of course Red Velvet Cupcakes.

Mothers, Don't Let Your Babies Become Athletes
From FanIQ...Athletes With Illegitimate Kids: Expanded And Updated 2009 Edition. Check out the link for the entire list. The following is just a sample.
THE HEAVYWEIGHTS
Calvin Murphy - 14 illegitimate kids by 9 women. You sir are our current champion.
Travis Henry - 9 kids by 9 women. All of this by 28. Impressive. He is on pace to catch Calvin. The fact that he's broke from paying child support may slow him down though.
Ex-San Antonio Spur Willie Anderson - 9 illegitimate kids. If only his field goal percentage had been as high as his impregnation rate.
Evander Holyfield - 9 illegitimate kids. Has more kids than brain cells left.Jason Caffey - 8 kids by 7 women.
Shawn Kemp - 7 illegitimate kids by 6 women last time. Supposedly up to 11 kids by 9 women now. Gives his nickname of the Reign Man new meaning. Might also explain why nearly played for an Italian team late in 2008.
The most impressive one of all is Tom Gordon who had three kids by the age of 17. Also of note, Karl Malone should be arrested.

Signing of the Day
What is recession proof and black and white all over? If you guessed the New York Yankees you are correct! The Yankees will soon sign first baseman Mark Teixeira to an 8 year, 180 million dollar contract. The team has signed 423.5 million dollars worth of contracts in the past month. They now have the four highest paid athletes in baseball (Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter, and CC Sabathia). Merry Christmas, Yankee fans. I can't wait till April to open this present.

The Michael Phelps Backlash
So, the more important issue of my post should be that Time Magazine, for their annual Person of the Year issue, picked Barack Obama as their #1 person this year. Deservingly so, the man got people of all walks of life excited about politics, and won the most exciting and history-making election of our time. But what I really want to talk about here is Micheal Phelps. He came in as one of Time's People Who Mattered in 2008, and also deservingly so. The man got the world glued to the Olympics, and shed a new interest in the sport of swimming, and kept breaking records along the way, and made the last couple of weeks of summer incredibly exciting. He is one of my entertainers of the year, for sure. Yada yada yada. What I REALLY REALLY want to talk about runs a bit shallower than that. Oh, Michael, I don't know what you did to deserve this, but someone in Time's photo department hates you. HATES you!!
Omg. I have no words for this picture. You know how sometimes on Facebook, your friends will tag you in a picture where it's like a really unflattering angle, or there's a flash of a double/triple chin, or your eyes are half closed? And you get all embarrassed and angry, and immediately detag yourself? Well, this is like that, except a thousand times worse. He can't detag himself, and MILLIONS will see this photo. Yeah yeah, I'm sure he's flattered that Time Magazine thinks he's so important, and they wrote a nice blurb about why he mattered in '08, but really? This picture is so awful! Now, I'm in the minority of people who actually don't think Michael Phelps is a bad looking man. I mean, yeah his face is kinda long and he looks kinda underdeveloped in certain lights, but overall, he's like goofy looking (not always a negative thing) and hence oddly cute.
But even I am appalled by this photo. The constricting goggles, the weird bug-like effect the eyewear creates, the thick neck, the dumb expression...do you really need me to go on?? And this comes at the heel of another 'We're honoring you man, but uh, we're also going to torture you at the same time' awful picture- his Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year cover. Yuck, yuck, yuck. I don't know, Michael... You might have had the best.year.ever, but I think this is just the beginning of your downfall! So, stop hanging around with Vegas cocktail waitresses, stop being douche-y, and get back in the pool and do what you do best!! And now I'm gonna go YouTube your exciting summer races to erase this awful image of you from my mind. Bleh.

The Skies Are Falling Today
All is lost! All is lost! The Giants lost to the Cowboys yesterday in an ugly, ugly game. The Giants have now lost two games in a row bringing their record down to a pedestrian 11-3. Tied for the best record in the conference. Tied for best?! Is that the best they can do? In fact this is such terrible news that after the game last night, NBC news opened with a story on the Giants' loss. Economic crisis, window left. War abroad, window right. Local fire, you're riding bitch. The Giants are riding shotgun tonight!
Let's calm down, Giants fan. We're already in the playoffs.
My favorite status from last night comes from my friend Suah who wrote "my hatred for the cowboys

Deal Of The Day
I am not talking about Target. I'm talking about the New York Yankees signing CC Sabathia for 7 years 161 million dollars. I'm not the biggest fan of this deal especially considering the size and length of this contract. But you gotta love getting one of the top pitchers in the game. Besides, it's the Yankees, the money tree grows even during winter. The Yanks starting rotation is now at CC Sabathia, Chien Ming Wang, Joba Chamberlain, and Phil Hughes. Put AJ Burnett in there, and we are good to go.

Activity Of The Day
What did I do to be productive this Friday? I went rock climbing at the Gravity Vault in Upper Saddle River, NJ. Today I did bouldering which is when you climb up certain pegged paths along a wall. I also top roped which requires being harnessed and climbing an even larger wall. As of now I prefer bouldering because falling down (I fell a whole lot) onto the mats is so much fun. I must warn you although it is a lot of fun, it is very tiring. It's $18 for the day and $7 for shoes. Let's go!

Smart Move of the Week
A skirmish broke out between the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets during their game on Wednesday night. Aaron Brooks of the Houston Rockets was asked to describe what happened in an interview.
Shaquille O'Neal is listed at 7 Ft 1 In and 325 lbs. Aaron Brooks is 6Ft even and 160lbs soaking wet. Smart move indeed Mr. Brooks.

Sports Recap: What's Going On?
Tennis (US Open)
I have bet on Roger Federer twice already this year and lost twice. You'd think I'd learn my lesson. Nah uh. I'm picking him to win the US Open. However folks, if Wimbledon is any indication, there are no losers in a Nadal vs Federer final. Well, two. Roger and I. I'm so sure he'll win I even decided to demo the more forgiving version of his racquet, the K-Factor 95. Despite being easier to use than the one Roger uses, it is as forgiving as a charging rhino.
Baseball
I knew there would come a day when the Yankees wouldn't make the playoffs. Honestly, I'm not as upset by their horrid play this year as I thought I'd be. And yet...all it takes is one month. One month of greatness can make the difference. You don't want to be like the Knicks do you?
Football
The Giants season opener is tonight against the Washington Redskins. Republican National Convention? No chance. Let's go G-Men! Other than winning the Super Bowl the best thing that Eli has done this year has been the following commercial.

These Are Some Amazing Fencing Photos

I love photography. And I have been caught up in all this Olympics-mania. So you can imagine how happy I am to post these amazing pictures of the Women's fencing event taken by photographers from various news wires.
I mean, they are just awe-inspiring photographs. They perfectly capture the movements and emotions that make up the sport. Click here for the rest of the set or read more to check out the rest of my favorites and to see the fencers' cool Daft Punk-like helmets!

While you were sleeping... OLYMPICS edition, Pt. 3
Oh, did you hear? Phelps won his 8th gold medal on Saturday night, becoming the greatest Olympian ever. You know who's the most happy about that? NBC. 31.1 million tuned in on Saturday night, giving the network its best Saturday night ratings in 18 years, and in the half hour the Americans were swimming, as many as 39.9 million were tuned in. This has been the most viewed Summer Olympics in years, helping to justify the $894 million NBC Universal paid for the American television rights. The numbers have plummeted some this second week, with the more popular events- swimming (esp with Phelps) and gymnastics out of the way, but I think it's safe to say NBC will retain the chance for these Games to be the most watched Olympics ever.
Phelps rolling in endorsements
I promise to stop talking about Phelps after this one! Prior to the games, he was making around $5 million/year. After his record breaking run at these Olympics, experts are predicting anywhere from $30-50 million/year. Ummm.... hello, Michael Phelps! My number is 201-555... ;) I may be a little bit late on that boat, there are rumors of his supposed love life floating around the internets already.
Liu Xiang pulls out of the Olympics
Where as you have victorious stories like Phelps's, the Olympics also spell heartbreak for the hundreds of athletes who don't get to stand on a podium. Such is the case with Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, who in China, is the equivalent of Phelps here. He became the first gold-medalist for China in track and field in Athens 4 years ago, and since then, he's become a national hero of epic proportions- endorsements, billboards, magazine covers. The entire country had been waiting for his hurdle race, as he was to defend his title in his home country. A flared tendon combined with a right hamstring injury, which was not helped by a false start during the race, forced him to walk off the field on Sunday, leaving 91,000 fans stunned, as well as the entire country crushed. I can just imagine how badly he wanted to finish the race, and the kind of pressure he must have been under to deliver, despite his body betraying him. Sad sad sad.
Shawn Johnson finally wins gold
The 16-year old World Champion finally won gold in the balance beams, the last gymnastics event, after racking up 3 silvers at these Games. A heavy favorite to win the all-around, she finished second to teammate Nastia Liukin, before also being edged for gold on the floor exercises as well as in the team competition. I think she's so cute and I was rooting for her, so I'm glad she finally got a gold.

While you were sleeping... OLYMPICS edition, Pt. 2
He won his fifth gold medal in Beijing, which puts him at an 11 career gold medals, and well on his way to: a) tying Mark Spitz for the most gold won in a single Olympic game (the record is 7) and b) attempting to win gold in every single event he's in, which would be 8, and c) becoming the most winningest Olympian EVER. Three more to go- a race today, Fri, and Sat. Oh, and he's also been breaking world records in every single one of those events, despite things like his goggles malfunctioning during his first race on Tuesday.
The Chinese women's gymnastics team win the gold
The Spanish basketball teams are douchebags
Members of the Spanish men's and women's basketball team are finally apologizing for an advertisement in which they are photographed making Asian-caricature faces, you know the pulling of the eyes to make them 'slanty.' Real nice, folks. Way to piss off not only your gracious hosts, but like 60% of the world human population. Who still does this besides little 6 year olds who don't know any better? Oh, and the team's coach's declined to apologize for the incident saying that it was meant to be a joke- "All of the Spanish people are close to the Chinese people mentally," he said. "We have a very good relationship." What does it mean to be close mentally? Yeah, I couldn't figure it out either.
No medal for Roger Federer
US tennis player James Blake ended favorite Roger Federer's bid for his first Olympic singles medal in the quarterfinals. Kinda stunning, considering in their previous eight matches, Blake had only won a single set (NOT game). Sorry hardcore tennis fans, this means no Federer-Nadal match at the finals on Sunday that tennis fans had been hoping for. Blake is also the only US male left in the games.
Random Olympic Facts and Figures
6: Consecutive archery gold medals for the South Korean women's team.
17: Number of events Michael Phelps plans to swim in nine days.
204: Nations competing at the Beijing Games.

While you were sleeping... OLYMPICS edition, Pt.1
The 2008 Beijing Olympics kicked off last Friday, and I am so glad. I am absolutely loving the excitement, the wins, the disappointments, the heroes, and the all-around thrill of it all. Here is a short recap of some of my personal highlights so far.
1 Billion watch the Opening Ceremonies
That would be 15 percent of the world population tuning in for the spectacular, 4.5 hours, $300 million costing, Zhang Yimou directed ceremonies. I finally watched it last night, and I was super impressed with the high-tech, artistically-driven show, as well as the unity of seeing all these world countries and its athletes come together.
Americans win the 4x100 free relay
This story had all the makings of a GREAT win- smack talking, underdogs, an Olympian's quest for the record books on the line. Jason Lezak, the oldest man on the US Swimming Team, slowly but surely pulling ahead of the French in the last 25 meters of the race to clinch the gold, by a fingertip? Pure adrenaline rush. This is how exciting this race was, I got so worked up, that I couldn't fall asleep. Maybe I'm a dork, sure, but this is what the Olympics are made of.
Probably the most talked about athlete of all who is competing at the Olympics this summer, this 23 year old American's bid to win an unprecendented 8 gold medals includes 9 days of races. So far, he's well on his way: as of this morning, he's won 3 of the races he's been in, which includes the aforementioned 4x100 freestyle relay. The 3rd gold medal he won gives him a ninth career win, which ties the record Mark Spitz has for the most in Olympics history (only 4 other athletes can claim that feat). He looks like a lithe, super long frat boy, though my parents think he's strangely "retarded" looking (their words, not mine!!). I think he's uber cute and I'm totally rooting for him.
Kerri Walsh loses her wedding ring in sand
Kerri Walsh, one half of the gold-medalists beach volleyball team with partner Misty May-Treanor, lost her wedding ring during their victorious game against Japan. She had to wait for 5 more matches to be played on the same sand before Chinese authorities swooped in with metal detectors and found the ring. Lesson learned, don't wear your valuables during sports!!
NBC payed over $900 million for coverage of the Olympics. So they're going to take advantage of all the eyeballs that are glued to their network by promoting the hell out of their upcoming fall shows. This Office promo, filmed specifically for airing during the Olympics, makes me uber excited about the return of the show (Sept 25!!). Woohooo!!!
Medal count so far
USA: 21, China: 20, South Korea: 12, Italy: 9, Australia: 9. I don't know why I bothered doing this, cause in about, oh, I don't know, an hour? the tally will probably change.

WTF of the Day
ESPN recently held a competition for "TitleTown USA," the place in the USA that resonates championships more than any other city. So of course when you think TitleTown the first place that comes to mind is Valdosta, Georgia. Valdosta? Really?
In Valdosta's defense, they have won a ton of championships...in high school. Valdosta has a division II college and no professional teams. You have got to be kidding me. TitleTown USA goes to high school championships? It's rumored that Valdosta has won about 500 championships in its history. Unfortunately, championships in high school are handed out like fortune cookies at Chinese restaurants.
I'm not saying it has to be New York (though it should be), but Valdosta it should not! In the words of Mark Jackson, "ESPN, you're better than that."
