Fun Stuff of the Day: Film the Blanks

Film the Blanks is an ongoing art experiment where every week a movie poster is abstracted/reduced to very little of what the original poster looks like. To play, commenters take a stab at what movie the poster is from, and the first 10 correct commenters are awarded a point each. You can play for your chance at a prize- at a 100, I think you get a printed version of one of the posters. I don't participate in that sense, but I do like checking the site from time to time. I'm not a movie buff and I'm not all too familiar with MOST of these posters, but I like checking the site cause the blanked out posters are works of arts themselves. But for the most part, I have no idea where many of posters are from. However, I guessed this one to the left as soon as I saw it. It is from my favorite movie ever, and I think it's one of the easier ones on the site. Any takers?

Ciao Readers!

Hello LiB Readers! The editors are back from our week-long trip to Italy, and though we are sad to have our glorious vaycay days behind us, I think it's safe to say that we're also super glad to be back home. Sorry for our lack of updates thus far, we've been jet lagged and bogged down with catch-up work. But what a trip it was! Though there are a ton of things we didn't get to do, it was still amazing to be out of the country and someplace new.

Here are some highlights and lowlights of our trip, for whenever you get a chance to go to Italy.

The Bad:
* When planning your vacation to Rome, be sure to check the Vatican City schedule on their website. They close a couple of days per month. The one day we left to do all the sightseeing in Rome was the one day they were closed. It was also a religious holiday called Ascension Thursday, but whatever. So we went to Rome and saw nothing Rome is known for- no Vatican City, no Sistine Chapel (this breaks my heart, Michaelangelo!!!), no St. Peter's. I'm still sad about this.

* Try not to rely on one person to do the waking up for you. We all overslept, and missed our check-in for the flight back home by 10 minutes. 10 minutes!!! This resulted us in running all over the Rome airport for wifii to book another flight home, and us losing lots of $$ to buy a ticket back. Oh, not to mention the flight we booked had us stuck in Frankfurt, Germany for 8 hours. In the middle of the night. It was literally the most painful travel experience ever.

* Hotel Aphrodite in Rome is the worst hotel ever. Overpriced and apparently not into customer service. We had to pay cash the first night cause their credit card machine wasn't working, and to top it off we had to get our own change cause they didn't have change. For our second and third night stay the credit card machine was working, but they wouldn't let us split and pay our bill 5 ways cause they would have to pay more taxes if they let us do that. WHAT. And instead of hearing out our complaints they were just like, "Every hotel is just like us!" WRONG. Our hotel in Florence let us split our bill, you assfaces. JUST SAY NO TO HOTEL APHRODITE.

But the good, oh the good:
* The weather! Italy is perfect in May. PERFECT. 70+ degrees weather, hot but not humid, sunny. I miss it, especially on crappy windy and rainy days like today.

* Hotel Globus, Florence. Best, staff, ever. Super friendly, super helpful. For some reason one of our rooms REEKED. But did we complain? No. Do you know why? Cause we loved them so much. They're so nice and helpful. Our friend Christina lost her phone in Florence and they did so much to help us find it. AMAZING. Make sure to have the cappuccino when having the continental breakfast!

* Florence in general. Everything was good, but I especially loved seeing Michaelangelo's David at Galleria dell' Accademia (he is perfect), as well as my girl crush Venus (Botticelli's The Birth of Venus) at the Uffuzi. Also, the Boboli Gardens is a must. Love.

* Food. Gelato at Vivoli in Florence (the rice flavor is YUMMY), pizza at Naples, kebabs, pasta, the espresso, TOMATOES. God, the tomatoes are good. Also hit up the supermarket for snacks. Ringos are like yummy cookie sandwiches, Magnums are delish ice cream bars, I'm obsessed with grissinis/breadsticks, and of course, grazie Italia for NUTELLA!

* Capri. The island of Capri is so lovely, even if its swarming with tourists. I think the most fascinating part of the whole thing was how narrow the roads are, and how adept the drivers are at squeezing past each other. Take a taxi/bus up to the top, Anacapri, and take the cablecar ride up to the tippy top of the island for a grandiose view. Amazing.

* Friends. It's such a blessing to have embarked on this trip with good friends. We laughed a lot, we shared a lot, we lived a lot. It was amazing. Whether you go across the world or across the country, go on a trip with friends. :)

Trailer of the Day: Nine

I don't know what the premise of this movie is, but it has like a crapload of stars, or should I say, amazing actors- Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard (MY GIRL CRUSH), Fergie. It looks to be some sort of musical? The trailer doesn't do much to explain the plot, but I am intrigued. Very much so. Beautiful women (seriously, LOVE. Marion.Cotillard.), high production scale. This brings me back to the summer where I just watched Moulin Rouge over and over again. I love musicals!

Site of the Day: My Life is Average

Back in February, I posted about the now popular site F My Life (FML). Not to be outdone, some geniuses came up with the site, My Life is Average (MLIA).

I want to say that it's so average .. that it's cute. It definitely makes you chuckle or at least smile :)

My favorite?
"Today, when I was taking a shower, I realized I was out of body wash, so I used bar soap instead. MLIA."

Playlist of the Day: Apple Songs

I love listening to music via imeem. And I love Apple. So after hearing that imeem would now be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch .. I am soo happy, I mean IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Anyway, in lieu of this, imeem is currently featuring a "Songs in Apple commercials" playlist. You might think it's a bit tool-ish, but there's no denying that Apple commercials are hella catchy, and the songs they feature in their commercials aren't that bad :x

Best Burgers in NYC!

I love a good burger. Actually, I love any burgers, even the gross high school cafeteria kind. Anyways, while the LiB editors are off in Italy getting out fill of pasta and pizza and gelato (and other foods that end with a vowel), all you NYC/NJ folks should take advantage of these burgers in the city! I've only had one on this list (SHAKE SHACK), but hope to cross some of these off SOON.

Cover of the Day: Kris Allen - Heartless

So I stopped watching American Idol this season after my favorite contestant, Anoop Desai, was voted off a few weeks ago, but I did manage to catch this performance below, and I was happy. Now, I'm not a fan of Kanye's last album, but there are a couple of great songs on it, including Heartless. For Kris Allen to walk onto that stage and perform it with nothing but his guitar? THIS IS WHY I LOVE GOOD COVERS. And this is the reason why he beat out season favorite Danny Gokey to make it into the finals next week. Now, he's never going to win, as Adam Lambert has had "American Idol Season 8 Winner" tattooed on his arm since the competition began, but considering this season really was about who was going to be the runner-up anyway, good job Kris. He's cute too. But married. Very married.

Open Letter to Jon & Kate Gosselin

Dear Gosselins,

I love you guys, I love your kids, I love your show. My love for your show has been well documented, and I have a ton of your episodes saved on my DVR for those rainy days. I wanted to be your nanny and steal little Leah cause she is so darn cute. But my love for you and your brood has been waning lately, and I'm sorry to say that it is your fault. I know it's not easy living in the spotlight, especially if you're not a rock star or an actor or someone who is expected to be followed around by the paparazzi. But, whether you like it or not, because your show has been a surprise and steady hit for TLC, that makes you guys public figures and media targets. Rumblings about things not being happy-go-lucky as you guys seem on the show have been around forever. But the marital strife rumors floating around the past month have just become ridiculous. And what's worse is your response to them.

You guys have ALWAYS said that you started the show because you wanted memories of your kids. It makes sense, since you have 8 of them, and it's a bit hard to take pictures and videotape them in the midst of actually taking care of them (ARE YOU LISTENING, OCTOMOM??). But you guys have always said your family is priority, and that when the show stopped being fun for you, or did harm to the kids, you'd stop. Well, what part of being on the cover of US Weekly 3 weeks in a row is fun? What part of going on national television to defend your marriage is not doing harm to your kids?? And what in God's name are you doing, Kate, by speaking to People about your marriage quite possibly ending???

Listen guys. I know it's not as simple as pulling the plug on your show. I'm sure you're contractually obligated to do more seasons and promote the hell out of the show, and blah blah. But why can't you deal with this privately instead of being on EVERY tabloid magazine in the nation? Who do you think you are, Paris Hilton?? You've said in every interview that it was a private matter, Kate, but then you go and tell People magazine details of your marriage struggles? Unfreakinbelievable. It's such a coinkydink that all of this is happening while you are on a book press tour, btw. I thought you said you wrote the books for your kids to have? Then why is traveling all over the country to promote it more important than being at home with your kids? Have you and Jon just both decided to stop thinking of your kids?

I don't even know what to think anymore. If this is some publicity stunt to drum up interest for the Season 5 premiere of your show, as some people think it is, well then that's pretty darn sad. But if your marriage is really in the crapper, like it increasingly and alarmingly looks to be, well, then I think you guys should be working something out, behind the scenes. I don't even know if I'm going to watch this season. I'm distressed about this whole thing. Your poor poor kids. They deserve better than the immaturity you both have been displaying as of late.

Happy Birthday, RPattz!

Today is a very awesome day. You see, 23 years ago from today, a potential hawt guy was born. And yes, HAWT did he become.

Robert Pattinson turns 23 years old today!

Normally, I do not think smokers are attractive, but for RPattz, this is my favorite photo of him in his recent GQ photo shoot :x

Song of the Day: "Flavor of Life" by Utada Hikaru

As mentioned in past posts, I fell in love with 꽃보다 남자 (Boys Before Flowers). However, ever since the Korean drama ended, I've been going through withdrawal. My cure for it? Watching the Japanese equivalent of it - 花より男子 (Hana Yori Dango) (I'm currently on Season 2).

Because the series was so popular in Japan, of course the freaking talented Utada Hikaru has a song on their soundtrack, "Flavor of Life."

Anyway, listen and enjoy:

Justin Timberlake on SNL

I don't love Justin Timberlake. Yes, I've been to his Sexyback tour (it was really good), and yes I own a song or two or eight of his. But eh, whatever. The kid, however, is funny. And he should host SNL every week. I like the fact that he isn't afraid to make fun of himself or look silly, which is what all SNL hosts should be. This past weekend was his 3rd time hosting the show, though it is his 4th appearance on the show since the season started (enough with the cameos, JT!). It was hilarious. From the "Bring it on into Plastic-ville" skit (gotta love the Lady Gaga parody- "Mediocre Face") to the Cornelius Timberlake sketch where he basically admits he and Britney were doing the nasty even when they had denied it ("Publicly, they'll claim to be virgins, but privately....he hit it."), it was just funny stuff. And of course, the sketch everyone is talking about this morning, "Motherlover" (aka, D**k in a Box part 2). How can you not love it, esp since it stars Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson?? Well done, JT.

Videos beyond the jump.

Kollaboration New York!

Kollaboration is an annual talent show featuring Asian American talent, and it is coming to NYC on June 27! I remember being jealous that all the LA folks got to experience the Kollab mania, but fear no more East Coast-ers, we get our own Kollab NY. Tickets just went on sale (ranging $25-60), and they're gonna sell out so I'd get them soon. I'm deffo going to be there (I'm also working the event so.. I kinda have to), but I think it's going to be really cool cause I kinda dig talent competitions- a la So You Think You Can Dance/American Idol... Hit me up if you want details, but it's pretty self-explanatory.

Person I want to be of the Day: Mindy Kaling

I heart Mindy Kaling. She's a writer on the Office, my favorite show, and she has written some of the best episodes: The Dundies, Take Your Daughter to Work Day, The INJURY!!! She is super cute, self-deprecating, and I imagine she talks exactly like Kelly Kapoor does, which is all kinds of awesome, you guys. She also has a mostly-defunct blog that I looooove called "Things I've Bought that I Love" which is super fantastic for wannabe fashionistas and bona-fide shopaholics like me. But really, let's go back to the talent. She's funny, she's a great writer, and she's managed to do what every funny writer hopes to do in Hollywood: have a stable paycheck, whilst landing a development deal to star in and write her own show. NBC signed her to a 2-year, 7-figure (!!) deal that will have her continue to work on the Office, while she is developing her show. Very a la Tina Fey who I also LOOOVE. You go, girls! I want to be Mindy when I grow up.

Fashion NONONOs

Monday night was one of my favorite NYC events of the year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's Annual Gala. It always brings out the biggest celebs in Hollywood and fashion world, and it's just a big showcase of how beautiful fashion can be... OR NOT. This year leaned more towards the NOT. I was amazed at some of the hideous things people chose to wear. RIDONK, HIDEOUS. I think the girls at Go Fug Yourself said it best: "...this season, the annual costume gala spawned more WTF moments than the Oscars, Globes, Grammys, and VMAs combined." YES. Madonna had a bird on her head, Rachel Weisz looked like she crawled back from the dead, the beautiful Helena Christensen looked like she was going to a prom...in the 80s...in the midwest, Ashley Olsen thought she was going to a Halloween party dressed as a ghost, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley looked like..well, I don't have words for that. In fact, I didn't love anything I saw this year, and I think it's cause I was so traumatized by all the horrible ensembles. But those are nothing compared to my 2 absolute worst dressed:

1. Rihanna.

I know she's been through a lot recently, but I don't care. I HATE THIS. Yeah she looks fierce, but um, the ridiculousness of this Dolce & Gabbana tux cancels out the fierceness. Don't do this, Rihanna. You look like a retartar. And no, I don't feel bad saying what everyone else is afraid to say to her face.

2. Leighton Meester.

I'm gonna preface this with, I love Leighton. I think she's uber pretty, she's the best actor on Gossip Girl, and I have no otherwise reason to believe her fashion sense is wack. But, this is my pick for the worst outfit of the night, year, decade, century. You blew this outfit out of the water, Leighton, which was my pick for the worst outfit EVER until now (it's a flowery diaper, with a backwards apron. WHAT.). I don't care that you're dressed head-to-toe Louis Vuitton, this is ridonk! You look like a 4 year old girl who dressed herself. And I actually think a normal 4 year old girl would scoff at this outfit. OMG, I can't stare at this for long, I'm getting nauseated. No. No, No. No, No, No.

Show I Want To See: Community

NBC announced its new fall lineup yesterday at their infront; of all the new shows, I must say that I am looking forward to Community:
"Joel McHale heads up a sitcom cast about a community college full of misfit students and teachers. Co-starring Chevy Chase as a fatuous, out-of-it goofball (finally, Chase finds appropriate latterday casting) and The Daily Show's John Oliver as McHale's pal. There seem to be a lot of jokes about The Breakfast Club. McHale's performance seems totally winning -- funny, funny-smarmy, funny-smart -- and the show is from a couple of guys who worked on Arrested Development. Looks good to me." (ew.com)

Anyway, check out the promo for the new series!

I love Hugh Jackman

Prior to this Wolverine thing, I really didn't think much of Hugh Jackman. I mean, he's a handsome dude and the Australian accent is HOT, but whatever. Then this whole Wolverine promotion started and I kinda fell in love a little. WHY? In addition to being insanely talented (you have to give him props for hosting the Oscars this year) the guy seems so nice. For real.

In my quest to discover everything Daniel Henney, I stumbled upon a Korean talk show he and Hugh were on when they were promoting the movie in Korea a few weeks back. Yes, Daniel is pretty and delightful and funny. But Hugh, oh Hugh. His ability to roll with the punches, laugh at the absurd, and cater to the ladies who host the show was impressive to say the least, and yeah, I kinda love him now. He's so charming!!! And then this morning, NYMag had a slideshow of him called, "The Many Thumbs of Hugh Jackman," which is just various pics of him with his thumbs up at various Wolverine promotional events. It's actually pretty hilarious. And I've kinda clicked through it more than once... I mean, look how happy he looks in all of those pictures! Oh, and just for fun, here's his Twitter.

Click for the YouTube video of him on the Korean talk show.

I tried finding a subbed version, to no avail. Even if you need translations, I think you'll find it funny. The show is called Gold Miss is Coming (or something like that) and watching these 30 something single ladies fawn over the HOTNESS that is Daniel+Hugh is freakin fantastic.
